Snack Cake Product Review : Drake's Devil Dogs Are Still Delicious And Fun To Eat

Updated on November 7, 2014

Chocolate Dessert Hot Dogs?

Ever since I was a child, I have really enjoyed eating various types of Drake's snack cakes. One of the varieties that I purchase and eat most frequently is the Drake's Devil Dog.

In case you've never eaten one, a Drake's Devil Dog is an oblong-shaped, creme-filled devils food snack cake. Each cake is individually wrapped, which makes them easy to eat anywhere, at any time. They actually resemble chocolate dessert hot dogs in appearance.

Devil Dog Devotion

When I was a student in elementary school and junior high, I would often eat devil dogs for dessert with my lunch. Back then, I really enjoyed eating them and I still do now. The CVS Pharmacy across the street from my apartment building sells individual devil dogs and I usually purchase at least one or two of the cakes there every week.

A few weeks ago, I purchased a family-size package of Drake's Devil Dogs at ShopRite supermarket in West Hartford, Connecticut and I'm glad that I did so.

Presented here is one food-lover's product review of Drake's Devil Dogs.

An individual Drake's Devil Dog measures-in at approximately 4.25"x 1.25"x 0.75. Because they are not too big and not too small, devil dogs are just the right size for a quick sweet snack.

These delightful snack cakes are sold individually at convenience stores, pharmacies and smaller food stores. They are also sold in wrapped twin-packs, that contain two of the snack cakes in a cardboard sleeve.

The family-size package of Drake's Devil Dogs contains eight of the individually wrapped snack cakes.

The retail price that I recently paid for one 13.24 ounce package of eight Drake's Devil Dogs at ShopRite was $2.99. To me, the price is a real bargain. It works out to roughly $0.37c per cake.

Texture / Consistency

Texture / Consistency
Some foods are always fun to eat. It's hard to be too serious when you're eating a Drake's Devil Dog.

A devil dog features a very appealing texture. The oblong pieces of devil's food cake that sandwich the creme filling are nice and soft, yet also fairly firm.

The creme filling in the middle of a Drake's Devil Dog is smooth and fluffy. Just the right amount of creme filling is provided, so that the balance between cake and filling is appealing.

Like muffins and donuts, Drake's Devil Dogs are really excellent when eaten along with a hot cup of coffee or cold glass of milk.

Nutritional Facts

One Drake's Devil Dog contains 180 calories with 60 calories from fat. One of these tasty snack cakes also contains 3 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 7 grams total fat, 0 mg of cholesterol, 130 mg of sodium, 27 grams total carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, 17 grams of sugars and 2 grams of protein.

Although I love eating snack cakes, especially Drake's cakes, I try to limit my intake of sugars and fat. After examining the nutrition facts labels on lots of other snack cakes including Drake's Yodels, coffee cakes and Ring Dings, I determined that Drake's Devil Dogs are one of the least unhealthy varieties.

Taste / Flavor

When it comes to flavor, Drake's Devil Dogs have a lot to offer, in an almost understated way. The top and bottom layers of devil's food cake are only mildly sweet, which I prefer over cake that is overly-sweet.

The creme filling that sits between the two pieces of devil's food cake is also only moderately sweet. The combination of the devil's food cake and the creme filling is quite satisfying.

The flavor offered by a Drake's Devil Dog sort of reminds me of a really good cupcake. The chocolate taste is somewhat subtle but it is complemented well by the creme filling.

On a flavor scale of one through ten, I would assign this product a rating of 9.5.

Overall Rating

All things considered, Drake's Devil Dogs are very flavorful snack cakes that are fun to eat. A blast from the past for many people, these cakes maintain the same flavor, appearance and texture they had decades ago.

Would I recommend these snack cakes? Yes, definitely yes.

5 stars for Drake's Devil Dogs
