An Unusual and Delicious Molasses Brownies, An Accidental but Yummy Molasses Recipe

Baked molasses brownies

Soft Molasses Cookie Recipe

  • 1/2 cup each -- sour milk, sugar, lard
  • 1 cups molasses
  • 2-1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoons ginger
  • 1/2 tablespoon soda

These were the directions for the COOKIES: Mix and let stand overnight. Roll out thin and bake. And we did mix and let stand overnight. The next day we were not able to roll out and bake, however ... the dough was impossible to work with. Finally, we just poured the remaining batter into an 8x8 metal pan and baked like we would for brownies.

Note: The above recipe was double the amounts shown but was cut in half because this amount is pretty much what we had left for the brownies. Be sure not to over-bake ... molasses tends to cook faster and/or burn easier.

Food products trivia

When I lived at home, we used both Swans Down and Softasilk cake flours. We can still buy the latter locally but I've not seen Swans Down for a long time. Currently it is a product of Reily Foods Company, New Orleans, LA. and probably can be found in that area. Of course, it can be purchased on line. Swans Down was a product of General Foods for years.
