Krampus is a well known figure in Bavaria. Who is Krampus? Krampus is to German kids what a lump of coal is to children here in the good old U.S.A! Except Krampus hauls the really bad children off to his lair and eats them! The quasi-evil children he just taunts or beats with a stick! If I would have known about Krampus, I might have been a better kid! Southern Tier Brewery has probably saved themselves a beating and subsequently elevated themselves to Saint Nick's nice list by paying tribute to Mr. Krampus! Southern Tier brings us the seasonal offering of Krampus Imperial Helles Lager !

Research

The stats: 9.0% abv. • 15.7ºL • Imperial Helles Lager • 22 oz

2-Row Pale Malt, Debittered Black Malt, Munich Malt, Caramel Malt,

Kettle Hops: Chinook

Dry Hops: Willamette

Serve in a snifter, best at 48 degrees F.

It is not very often I sample beer without using my favorite million $$$$$ glass. However Krampus says use a snifter, so I am using a snifter because I do not want to suffer a severe beating with a stick! Or worse, be hauled off to a cave to be eaten as a beer infused pot roast!

Excellent lacing and Retention

Time for the appearance and aroma portion of the show! The pour gives us a beautiful three finger, creamy, off white head with excellent lacing and retention. The color is a nice golden amber. The aroma is fresh green hops and yeasty bread. Overall a great appearance and aroma! Makes me want a taste!

My daughter says, "Smells like alcohol".

Tasting

A smooth medium mouthfeel. Taste like the aroma. Hops with a tip of the tongue bitterness leads to a light sweetness with a hint of pine and a hops bite on the aftertaste.

Summary

Hops!! It mellows with a few sips but above average hops for a helles. Hopheads will like this! However, caution for the casual beer drinker, this beer may not be for you! Personally, for me...very drinkable! $8.99 a 22 ouncer here in the Great State of Ohio.

Musical Pairing: Ozzy Osbourne's "Speak of the Devil". Seriously, this a match made in heaven....errrr....hell?! It looks like they are getting ready to rumble! Also check the similarities! The eyes, fangs and tongue....slap a stick in the Oz's hand and he is ready to scare the beeeejeeezus out of some naughty boys and girls! The song "Black Sabbath goes well with this selection, or if you are feeling particularly evil Krampus enjoys N.I.B!
