Choosing and Using Spice Canisters

Updated on September 28, 2011

Organizing and Storing With Spice Canisters

Spice canisters are a great way to store and use spices. Many of them keep spices fresh longer with air tight seals. Some of them make dispensing those spices easier too with flip or twist tops that allow you to sprinkle, pour, and in some cases dispense pre-measured amounts as you work.

There are a variety of finishes available to complement your decor. Afterall, a colorful display of spices can brighten any kitchen. Many of the designs on this page are also space savers that will either hang on the wall, your refrigerator, or maintain a narrow profile on your counter top.

Even if cooking isn't your thing, spice canisters can be flexible. Many of them make great containers for other small items. We have just a few other suggestions here.

More Uses

Spice canisters are handy storage for more than spices, they can hold just about any small item you can imagine. Thumb tacks, small pins, sewing related items like snaps, beads, sequins, hook & eyes, and much more.

They can be used to store toothpicks, small buttons, earrings, hair pins, rubber bands, fish food, pet vitamins, and even small items in the garage or workshop like brads, staples, and more

Buying Tips

Here are just a few things to consider when choosing spice canisters.

1. Size and Number
Obviously the number of spices you have to store and want easy access to will determine how many containers you need. The size of the containers you want will depend upon the volume you use. Herbs and spices keep for a long period of time. In general, herbs begin loosing flavor between 6 months and a year and spices after two years. There are no health risks associated with consuming them after a longer period of time, but the flavor simply won't be as good. Therefore, storing large quantities at the risk of not using all of them isn't a serious problem.

2. Access
Having quick and easy access is important to most cooks. Some of these sets sit on the counter top for easy access. One that rotates can make finding the spices you want easier. However, if counter space is limited or you don't need a large number of containers, mounting them on the wall or near your cooking area can be very convenient.

Easy identification also makes access easy. Some of these items provide labels, some are color coded, and others provide see through lids or sides that also make it easy to know when you need to refill.

While you are cooking, having a flip top can make your cooking process move more smoothly and some of these items even offer an auto-measure feature to save time. Screw on tops provide a good seal for preservation but they do consume a few seconds and two hands to access the contents.

3. Finish
A final consideration of course is getting the look you want. This is based entirely on personal preference and the decor of your room.

Kamenstein offers a variety of options. Here a set of 5 or 6 spice canisters is available. These aluminum canisters can complement either a modern decor or a more traditional one.
