Enjoy a good cup of hot, spiced coffee

There are many different of ways to improve on basic cup of hot coffee, and my personal favourite is to add a dash or two of something spicy. I love a hint of cinnamon, cloves or nutmeg. Adding whole spices to your coffee grounds before you brew is a good way to do this. That's a little handy tip. Trust me. The second and third recipes below call tfor this technique, but the first one has you add the ground spices after brewing.

So, here are a few simple recipes for spiced coffee. These are all for coffee served hot so these drinks will really keep you warm during these cold winter days. It almost makes you forget that it won't stop snowing.

Fragrant Spiced Coffee

  • 3 cups already brewed coffee
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cloves
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon

Blend together brown sugar, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon (use ground spices in this case, not whole). Mix coffee and cream together with the spice mixture. Serve hot. Serves 4.

Mediterranean Coffee

  • 3 tbs ground coffee (coarse)
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp cocoa
  • 1 tsp anise seed (whole)
  • Pinch of dried orange peel pieces

Combine all the ingredients, and brew by your favorite method. Using a french press or a plunger pot is the traditional brewing style for this particular coffee recipe. Makes 1-2 cups of coffee.

Sweet Fennel Coffee

  • 3 tbs ground coffee
  • 2 cinnamon sticks, broken
  • 6 whole fennel seeds, crushed
  • 1 tbs brown sugar

Mix coffee grounds and spices, and brew however you like. Add the sugar to your finished cup for that sweet touch. Also serves 1 or 2 cups of coffee.

Terri, this is a hub after my own heart. I found it via a link on my coffee story. I am always discovering and experimenting with new coffee spices. One I just found at (of all places) Safeway is Indian garam masala, and I've added it (just a bit because it's sweet/hot) to my Spiced Coffee mix. My next one is orenage peel - which I also found at Safeway already finely ground. I originally got the idea for orange peel from the recipe for the spices used for mulled wine.

I'm totally intrigued by some of the spices you use in your spiced coffees - particularly fennel and anise seeds. I'll definitely be trying these out. Thanks for the new spices leads!
