Spicy Black Bean Burgers Recipe

Updated on September 22, 2014

Nutritious and Incredibly Filling

Sometimes we just do not want meat. Black bean burgers gives the impression of meat without the meat. It looks like a real hamburger, can be cooked like a real hamburger, can be dressed like a real burger, and tastes just as good as real burger.

I have noticed it is a lot more filling than ground beef. It is impossible to eat more than one of these babies. The following easy to make recipe allows for four servings that are high in protein, low in fat, and yummy.

The Ingredients

  • 2 small jalapenos diced
  • 1 small onion diced
  • One 19 oz can of black beans, lightly rinsed
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 egg

Tip:

Adding the egg is important. It keeps everything from falling apart when cooking.

The Directions

Coarsely chop black beans with food processor (a pastry blender works in a pinch too). It should be chunky, not mushy. Add onions, egg and jalapenos.

In small bowl, mix bread crumbs with garlic powder and salt. Add to bean mixture and blend with spoon.

Shape mixture into four paddies. Apply to grill with your favorite barbecue sauce. I use an indoor grill with a preset temperature for ten minutes, turning after five.

Can also be done in pan on stove. I have not attempted cooking these on an outdoor grill as I'm not sure how well they would stay formed.

The Indoor Grill

Having an indoor grill makes cooking on the fly simple. It is great for hot sandwiches or to grill meats (or black bean burgers) for one or two people. We use ours at least once a week.

As a vegetarian I think Black Bean burgers are great! I have never been sure how to make them before, I have only bought bean burgers, but now I know they'll be no more processed bean burgers...it will be homemade black bean burgers all the way!

Sounds like a great idea for a burger, if you did want a little meat maybe throw in some ground turkey in the mix and some fresh spinach leaves on top, a dash of shredded pepper jack cheese and kapow! Instant heart burn, I mean mouth watering delight. :)

I've never had a black bean burger but will go with your recommendation and recipe. You are so right, I just don't always care to have meat and this is probably a healthier protein choice.

@anonymous: I completely disagree "me". Mixing them in a separate bowl helps blend the ingredients so you don't end up with part of the burger being more garlicky or salty or whatnot than another. Feel free to use a dirty bowl.

There's no need to mix the dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Why do recipes always try to make you do extra, unnecessary steps? I think it's a plot by the dish detergent people because using the extra bowl is just something to wash.

Yay, more vegetarian/vegan recipes! Oh, for anyone who is allergic to eggs (like me), I think you can actually replace the eggs with tofu in the recipe above. I do that for other recipes, and use egg replacement for baking.

I'm gonna look through all the recipes later. For now, I'm favoriting this and giving it 5*.
