Swappuccino: The 100 Calorie Frappuccino
Let's face the facts. We tell ourselves that by going to Starbucks, and drinking coffee instead of eating lunch, we are 'making healthy choices.' But, in reality, Starbucks isn't the best for us. Unless you order it black, they load their coffee with sugar, syrups, drizzles, whip cream and unnecessary fat and calories. But, this does not mean you have to skip your morning pick-me-up. Here is a recipe that will satisfy both your taste buds, your health, and, not to mention, your wallet! This is a mock recipe for Starbucks Frappuccino. Get ready for this! It's a good one!
What you need!
- 3/4 cup Almond Breeze Unsweetened Almond Milk, (Vanilla or Original)
- 2 teaspoons instant coffee
- 1 tablespoon sugar-free syrup
- 1 tablespoon sugar-free powder coffee creamer
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder, (for mocha)
- 1 tablespoon sugar-free caramel syrup, (for caramel)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, (for vanilla)
- 8-10 ice cubes
- 2 teaspoons sugar, or, 3 sweetener packets to save calories
- 1/4 cup warm water
Don't have instant coffee?
If you only have ground coffee, no need to run to the store! Make 3/4 cup of double-strength coffee, and pour it in with the milk. Your end result might be a bit watery, but it will still be delicious!
Measure out 3/4 cup of unsweetened almond milk. I use Almond Breeze. However, feel free to use any brand you want. Just be aware that this could alter the calories.
Pour the almond milk into a blender. Next, measure out 2 teaspoons of instant coffee. Make sure your coffee is instant! You don't want a gritty frappuccino! Put the coffee in with the milk.
Put the 1/4 cup of warm water in a glass or bowl. Pour the powdered coffee creamer into the water, and stir. Set the bowl aside, and wait for the powder to dissolve.
While you're waiting for the creamer, measure out a tablespoon of syrup. Put it in the blender, along with the milk and coffee.
DeVinci Gourmet makes great sugar-free zero-calorie syrups. They come in a huge selection of flavors, including white chocolate, raspberry, and, my personal go-to, french vanilla. You can usually find them in the coffee section of your supermarket.
For Vanilla Frappuccino
Add about 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the blender. You can add more, or less, depending on your preferred taste.
For Mocha Frappuccino
1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder will give your frappuccino a chocolatey twist. Put this in with the rest of the ingredients.
*Adding cocoa powder will add 10-15 calories, depending on the brand.
For Caramel Frappuccino
Depending on how much caramel you care for, add in some sugar-free caramel syrup. I recommend about 1 tablespoon. Try to find a zero-calorie brand. Otherwise, this will alter the calories.
Check on your powdered creamer. It should be dissolved by now. Pour it into the blender. the ice cubes. Using 10 will give you a thicker, icier drink, while 8 will be more liquidy. I personally like to go right in the middle, with 9.
The next step provides you with some options. You can either use Splenda, or sugar. Using Splenda will give your coffee a little bit of a "fake" taste, while using real sugar makes it more like a Starbucks Frappuccino. It becomes thicker, and more solid. Using real sugar will still give you a 100 calorie drink. Sweeteners will make it lower. Whatever your choice is, put it in the blender with the rest of the ingredients.

Now it's mixing time! Set the blender to 'blend' or 'ice crush.' Mix for about 30 seconds. Check the consistency. If it is chunky and slightly watery, blend for another few seconds. It should be thicker than water, but not to the point where you can't suck it through a straw. Don't let it sit for too long after blending, or it will start to separate.
And you've got yourself a yummy, icy, refreshing frappuccino! Whether you made vanilla, caramel, or mocha, I'm sure you're going to love the end result. Whip this up on a hot day, or any day, for that matter. Now you can have your Starbucks, without the extra calories, fat, and ingredients. Enjoy!
