Sweetie's: A Hidden New London Treat

In today's fast-paced world, many of us have become used to prepared meals, packaged treats, and drive-thru garbage. We have forgotten the days of smelling bread baking in the oven and enjoying conversation while food is being prepared before us. At Sweetie's Bakery and Cafe in New London, CT, you can have the best of both worlds: a home-cooked meal you can enjoy in a half hour or less.

When you smell the bread or food from the street, you can't help but walk in to find out what is being cooked. When you see the inviting decor, you can't help but smile. Once you meet the staff, enjoy a meal, and realize what a gem this little cafe is, you can't help but return with friends. Sweetie's has that home feel where you can sit and chat while the food is being prepared, talk with other guests, and enjoy a bit of time away from the office or home. Whether you sit at the counter or in the diner-style tables, you are close enough to others to feel like you are at Grandma's house for an afternoon meal (or breakfast or quick snack).

When I first visited Sweetie's last week, I had no idea I was about to find my new favorite place to meet with friends. I thought I was going to come out with a cupcake or enjoy a freshly-cooked sandwich, maybe even venture to try the award-winning Grandma's Mac & Cheese. When I learned all their food is prepared on-site from wholesome, locally grown ingredients, and that even their condiments are prepared from scratch, I felt giddy. I was excited to have finally found a restaurant where I could enjoy the feeling of someone else cooking for me yet know that I wasn't putting garbage into my body. Is everything in the shop on Bob Harper's "Skinny Rules" list, probably not. However, it is all made with love and care, just the way your Grandma would make it.

For families, this would be a wonderful place to have a weekly or monthly tradition of eating out and talking about the things that make you happy. While you are in the area, you can walk through downtown New London and enjoy the art and history that makes this town so amazing. The downtown area has improved a lot since I was a kid and provides several attractions for adults and a few fun things for families, such as the pier and Whale Tail on the parade.

For singles, this is a wonderful place to meet with friends before enjoying some of the New London nightlife, such as dancing at Mambo's, open mic night at the Bean & Leaf, or soon stopping by to read and meet local authors at the Monte Cristo Bookstore. You can grab a great chicken salad sandwich (Waldorff style when I was there Friday) or one of the amazing varieties of grilled cheese and then enjoy a walk through the downtown area and enjoy the newest exhibit at the Hygenic or one of the artist studios along State Street, Union Street, and the local area.

Whether you stop at Sweetie's as your reason for going to New London, for breakfast or lunch during your workday, or because you are about to enjoy the other things to do, you will not be disappointed. The food is amazing and the staff is wonderful. Take a moment to talk with Lindsay about how her dream came true - and become inspired to believe your dreams will one day become reality. Talk with Aaron about the daily specials or the way Netflix never has the right volume control! Or enjoy a conversation with Caroline about which dessert to try and what she will be doing upon graduation. They are three amazing people with great personalities that complete the experience known as Sweetie's Bakery and Cafe. Stop by today and leave feedback about what you thought.

I would go there just because the front of the store is so happy looking....but the food sound divine. Thanks for giving me a glimpse; now all I have to do is fly 3000 miles for a taste treat.
