Taco Seasoning: Easy Tex-Mex Spice Mix Recipe

Updated on April 16, 2013

Make your own Taco Seasoning at home. It's easy!

Taco seasoning is a blended mix of spices including cumin, chili powder, paprika and garlic (to name a few), which lends its particular 'southwestern' flavor to many tex-mex and mexican inspired dishes.

I realized I was out of store-bought taco seasoning mix the other night right in the middle of cooking my favorite low fat soft tacos (with turkey), but luckily my pantry is not shy of loose spices in general, so I was able to whip up exactly what I needed and avoid a bland dinner disaster. Phew!

It is easy to make up your own batch of taco seasoning at home with the following simple recipe, and of course you can tweak the level of spiciness by adding or reducing the amount of chili powder according to your own particular preference.

See below for ways to use your new homemade taco seasoning spice mix!

• 1 tablespoon chili powder

• 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin

• 1/2 teaspoon paprika

• 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

• 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

• 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

• 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano

• 1 teaspoon sea salt

• 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

Mix together all spices in a small bowl or container, preferably with a pour spout, or use a funnel to pour into an airtight container and store at room temperature.

Ways to use your Taco Seasoning

Use your homemade taco seasoning mix in any of your favorite mexican or tex-mex recipes, including seven layer dip, bean dip, enchiladas, chili, soups, stews, and tacos, of course!

Also try mixing it into light sour cream or fat free plain yogurt to make a tasty low fat dip for veggies or chips, or use this same mixture as a sauce (for lettuce wraps, tacos, or fajitas) or as a dressing on your favorite salad for a southwestern flair.

This flavorful homemade spice mix can also be used as a rub for meat or as a seasoning for chicken, fish or even veggies!
