Tasty Asian Vegan Recipes

Many countries in Asia have a lot of tasty vegan and vegetarian snacks and dishes, which are healthy and easy to make. In general a lot of Asian countries, particularly Japan do not have many true vegans due to their love of seafood and their extensive use of dairy products and egg. Sea food, whether cooked or uncooked is a very big part of the Japanese diet and it would be very difficult and an inconvenience to the family if this was absent.

However, since Japanese do not eat as much meat as people in western countries, there are many dishes which are suitable vegetarians or even vegans. The milk, egg and other animal products can be substituted which other ingredients to make the perfect vegan dish.

In Japan there is no official Japanese word or term for Vegan, since it's quite unheard of, but food consisting of no animal products is required for people with illnesses and allergies as well as for religious reasons.

Bean Curd Burgers

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 Cup of bean curd lees
  • 1/4 Cup of Whole wheat pastry flour
  • 2 Table spoons of Cornmeal
  • 2 Table spoons of mashed potatoes or Quaker Oats
  • 2 Cups of unpolished rice
  • 1/3 cup of Nutritional Yeast
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of Marjoram powder
  • 1 cup of corn

How to make:

Mix the Bean curd with, Whole wheat, rice and nutritional yeast. Next add the baking powder, garlic and marjoram.

Add the corn and mix well. Using both wet hands, remove the seeds and make a patty shape.

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C and use a lightly greased baking pan. Lightly spray oil or brush the patty and then bake for 25 minutes.

For a burger sandwich, bread, sliced vegetables, ketchup and mustard goes really well.

Black Sesame Bread

Healthy, no animal raw materials, delicious when grilled with light honey.

Ingredients

Bread flour 240g

Cake flour 30g

Salt 3g

Beet sugar 15g

Black sesame 20g

Neri sesame (black)15 ~ 45g

Water 200g

Dry yeast 3g


Bake bread as you would normally simply including the above ingredients.


Sesame Cucumber Rolls

A very healthy and tasty Japanese snack which is easy to make and hand rolled. It is made using Gomashio which is toasted sesame seeds with salt. It also comes with soy flavouring mainly being a mixture of vinegar, sugar and salt.

Best served with soy sauce and wasabi.

Ingredients

  • A cup of rice, thoroughly washed and rinsed.

Vegans in Asia

100% Vegans are very rare in Asia since meat and fish tends to be part of the culture, rather than just to satisfy ones hunger. There are many Asian people who will avoid red meat for dieting purposes. Many people in Asian countries will be happy to go days without meat and live lives similar to vegetarians for periods.
