Just What Are Tater Tots?

In case you don't know Tater Tots is a registered trademark of the Ore Ida Corporation. A Tater Tot is made of finely grated potatoes that are then formed into the little shapes that you find Tater Tots shaped into.

The product was first developed in 1953 when the Ore Ida founders were trying to come up with a way to use up all the left over potato trimmings. To make a long story short they chopped up the left over potatoes, added flour and then ran the mixture through a machine that cut the resulting product up into those little small pieces that you now find in the bag of Tater Tots.

The product was first offered for sale in 1956 and at first it was a very inexpensive product but because it was so cheap people wouldn't buy it. Ore Ida raised the price and people began to buy the Tater Tots. In today's market people buy about 100 million pounds of Tater Tots a year. Can you even imagine that.

Ore Ida says you're never too old for Tater Tots. In case you don't know Ore Ida has now been making Tater Tots for over 60 years and during that 60 years people have been coming up with all kinds of ways to make delicious Tater Tot dishes. Below you'll find all kinds of wonderful recipes made with Tater Tots. And I'll bet you can come up with all kinds of ways to cook Tater Tot dishes to.

Today you'll find that the restaurant chain Sonic features Tater Tots on their menu and they offer them with chili, cheese, fried onions, and other toppings. In some Sonic stores you'll even find them being offered as Nacho Tots. This most likely came from the American west where Nacho Tots is a very popular dish. In the United States Tater Tots are also a popular item in Cafeterias and School lunch counters.

Nacho Tater Tots

In the Pacific Northwest Tater Tots are sold topped with Nacho Cheese, Sliced Fresh Jalapenos, Diced Sweet Onions, Sour Cream and Guacamole. And they are really good made that way. I just had some made that way a few minutes ago and they were wonderful. I had mine as a casserole with all the toppings and every one that tried the Nacho Casserole loved it.

How To Make Nacho Tater Tot Casserole

In a 13" X 9" baking dish you'll want to fill the baking dish up with a couple of layers of Tater Tots and then you'll want to sprinkle the dish with fine diced jalapenos, diced sweet onion, sour cream and then stir everything up together. Add salt and pepper to taste. Now add a thin layer of Nacho Cheese on top and bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. When you take it out of the oven offer salsa and guacamole on the side.

If you really want to jazz this dish up add a cup of ground beef with taco seasoning cooked in it and you'll have a complete meal that the kids will love. Keep in mind that its your Nacho Tater Tot Casserole and you can add or take away what you want to. One of the best ones I ever had was made with shredded chicken thigh meat that had been shredded and cooked with taco seasoning. So use a little out of the box thinking when your coming up with your version of the Nacho Tater Tot Casserole.

Southwest Tater Tot Casserole

Start out with a regular size package of Tater Tots. Cook your Tater Tots in a greased 13" X 9" baking dish until the Tater Tots are done and brown. This should take about 20 minutes. Now you will need.

Sweet Potato Tater Tot Casserole

One really great thing I noticed the other day in the grocery store was that you can now buy sweet potato tater tots. Now I'll have to come up with all kinds of delicious recipes for the sweet potato tater tots.

Ingredients Needed For Your Sweet Potato Tater Tot Casserole

1. One Bag Sweet Potato Tater Tots.

2. Two Cups Yellow Summer Squash Sliced Thin.

3. One Tablespoon Fresh Minced Garlic.

4. One Cup Frozen Green Beans Chopped Fine.

5. One Can Cheddar Cheese Soup.

6. One Can Cream Of Chicken Soup.

7. One Pound Ground Beef Cooked Brown And Drained Well.

8. Salt And Pepper To Taste.

9. One Cup Sharp Cheddar Cheese.

You'll want to put your ground beef and garlic in a skillet and brown it well. When you have the beef hot add your squash slices to the skillet. Cook stirring often until you have the squash tender but don't overcook your beef. Drain well and then put the beef, squash, and garlic into the bottom of a large casserole dish that you have sprayed with vegetable cooking spray.

Pour in the cheddar cheese soup and the cream of chicken soup and smooth them out with a spoon. Now pour your sweet potato tater tots in and then the green beans. Sprinkle to taste with the salt and pepper. Let your oven heat up to 350 degrees and then put the casserole in the hot oven for twenty minutes. After twenty minutes take the casserole out of the oven and sprinkle the sharp cheddar cheese over the top of your casserole. Put back in the oven for 10-12 minutes until the cheese is completely melted. Set out of the oven and let it set for at least 10 minutes before you dish it up and serve it. Offer sour cream on the side for those people that want to add it to their serving. I sometimes also offer a dish of fine diced green onions including the tops.
