Notes on the Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

My first word on this planet was "cookie", so I'd like to think I know something about what makes the best chocolate chip cookie. This recipe is the best I've found. It contains a lot of butter and extra vanilla, which gives the cookies a richness that's pretty intense. Also, these chocolate chip cookies have a wonderful, thick consistency. Done right, the cookies have a heft and appear as though they were purchased in a bakery.

I am not a person who likes nuts or much extra in his cookies. Chocolate chip cookies are great without anything extra and you can make these cookies without the Skor bars and you will still be amazed. However, the Skor bars add a unique characteristic to the cookie that is fantastic. I will admit that it does make the chocolate chip cookie more than a regular chocolate chip cookie, but still, it's a rich flavor that's hard to resist. People who have tried this cookie done right love them and can't stop eating them. A friend of mine of mine, who first gave me the recipe I've modified, calls them "evil" chocolate chip cookies.

I have also included Kahlua as a possible optional ingredient. Kahlua adds a nice flavor to the cookie and can enhance the caramel flavor of the Skor bars or simply add another layer of taste that creates an interesting cookie. I would recommend making the cookie without the Kahlua first to get it right and then experimenting with it later. However, the more Kahlua, the more the consistency of the cookie changes, so be careful with it.

This article is titled "The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies". I'm not exaggerating. I promise.

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cups dark brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
  • 3 Skor bars
  • 1-5 teaspoons Kahlua (optional)

Sift together flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl and set aside.

Cream butter (or soften in a microwave for 20 seconds). Mix with sugars, eggs, and vanilla. Stir in sifted ingredients. Mix in chocolate chips. Break Skor bars into small pieces and mix in.

Roll dough into balls about the size of a golf ball and put on a greased baking tray or an air tray about 9 to 12 to a pan. Bake at 375 degrees F for 10 minutes or until edges turn golden brown. Do not over bake. Baking time may vary depending on oven, but somewhere between 10 and 13 minutes is likely enough. Leave on tray for five minutes or so then remove to racks for cooling. Yields between four and five dozen cookies.
