The Big Mac Syndrome: Why does the Big Mac only have one slice of cheese?
My Big Mac
A friend of mine recently went to McDonald’s, and was upset when she realized her Big Mac only had one slice of cheese. I told her the Big Mac has always been prepared that way for as long as I can remember. She began a heated debate with me over the issue. Her argument is they put two slices of cheese on the double cheeseburger which cost less than a Big Mac. Maybe McDonald’s is being different by adding only one slice of cheese. On the other hand they could be cutting cost, and raising profits.
The Big Mac also has other issues. The beef doesn’t fully cover the bun! It seems like McDonald’s should either decrease the bun size or increase the size of the beef slightly. I remember working for McDonald’s several years ago. The first question I asked the hiring manager was what is the pre-cooking weight for the beef patties. I was shocked to learn when he told me there only a tenth of a pound. Talk about small……
McDonald’s could improve the Big Mac, but they wont because it still sells fairly well. I would make several changes to improve the quality, and taste.
1.Increase the size of the all beef patties.
2.Use fresh chopped onions instead of those dehydrated onions.
3.Reduce the amount of the special sauce. They get carried away, and use too much.
4.Make it with two slices of cheese.
5.Only serve beef fresh off the grill! They pre cook the beef, and let it sit in a holding pan. Quite often they don’t observe holding times.
