The Cost of Making Alfredo Sauce

I love Fettuccine Alfredo and this is one of my favorite recipes. With the cost of butter, cream and cheese it is also very expensive. It is definitely cheaper to buy in a jar or an envelope but when I make it from scratch I can control the quality of the ingredients and the amount of salt and fat. I also know there are no preservatives in it.

I've included the cost of my ingredients at the bottom of the article so you can compare to prices in your area.

Alfredo Sauce

Yield - 4 servings

2 cups Heavy cream $3.19

1 stick Butter $1.25

1 cup Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese $2.12

¼ t Pepper $.01

1 T Fresh parsley $.04

Total Cost $6.61

Cost per serving $1.65


Cost to buy (per serving):

From an envelope mix $1.19 (this includes the price of the mix plus milk and butter)

In a jar $.26

Cost of my ingredients

$3.19 for 1 pint of heavy cream

$4.99 for 1 pound of butter

$5.99 for 8 ounces of parmesan cheese

$1.48 for 2 ounces of pepper

$.79 for 1 bunch of fresh parsley

$1.68 for .25 ounces of dried parsley

$1.56 for an envelope mix – 2 servings

$1.84 for a jar – 7 servings
