The Cost of Making Chicken Noodle Soup

We all know how cheap soup is to buy – whether in a can, envelope, or microwavable bowl. So it is not surprising to learn that it is much more expensive to make. Obviously, the price can vary depending on the vegetables and spices you use. But I love the taste of homemade soup and I can control the amount of salt.

I've included the cost of my ingredients at the bottom of the article so you can compare to prices in your area.

Chicken Noodle Soup

Yield - 9 servings

3 pounds Fryer chicken $7.47

1 Medium onion $.34

1 ½ t Italian Seasoning $.23

1 t Lemon pepper $.06

3 Garlic cloves $.15

4 Bay leaves $.48

3 Chicken bouillon cubes $.45

1 t Salt $.00 (less than a penny)

1 t Pepper $.05

2 cups Sliced carrots $.40

2 cups Sliced celery $.50

2 ½ cups Egg noodles $.91

1 cup Sliced mushrooms $1.00

3 T Parsley $.12 (see note below)

1/3 cup Cooking sherry $.67

2 t Rosemary $.27 (see note below)

Total Cost $13.08

Cost per serving $1.45

Note: If you use dried parsley it will cost you $.24 more for this recipe. If you use dried rosemary in this recipe it will save you $.04 for this recipe.
