The Cost of Making Dessert Sauces

Dessert sauces are so easy to make and generally require only a few ingredients. I thought it would be cheaper to make my own, but I was wrong! Here are recipes for Fudge Sauce, Caramel Sauce and Nutella.

I've included the cost of my ingredients at the bottom of the article so you can compare to prices in your area.

For the substitutes I refer to, see:

Fudge Sauce

Yield 2 ½ cups

3/4 cups Heavy cream $1.20 (see note below)

1/2 cups Butter $.62

1/8 t Salt $.00 (less than a penny)

1/2 cups Sugar $.21

2 T Light corn syrup $.11

9 ounces Semi-sweet chocolate $5.28 (see note below)

1 t Vanilla extract $.34

Total Cost $7.75

Cost per ounce $.39

Cost to buy per ounce $.19

Note: If you substitute homemade cream you save $.37 and if you substitute homemade semi-sweet chocolate you save $3.63 bringing the cost of the recipe down to $3.75 or $.19 per ounce.

Caramel Sauce

Yield 2 cups

1 1/4 cups Heavy cream $1.99 (see note below)

2 TButter $.31

1/8 t Salt $.00 (less than a penny)

1 1/2 cups Sugar $.63

1/2 t Vanilla extract $.17

Total Cost $3.11

Cost per ounce $.19

Cost to buy per ounce $.13

Note: If you substitute homemade cream you save $.63 bringing the cost of the recipe down to $2.48 or $.15 per ounce.

Nutella

Yield 2 cups

1 1/3 cups Hazelnuts $5.73

1/3 cups Almonds $.61

1 ¾ cups Milk $61

7/8 cups Powdered milk $1.31

3 T Honey $34

1/8 t Salt $.00 (less than a penny)

6 ounces Semi-sweet chocolate $.3.52 (see note below)

5 ounces Milk Chocolate $1.33

Total Cost $13.45

Cost per ounce $.84

Cost to buy per ounce $.25

Note: If you substitute homemade semi-sweet chocolate you save $2.42 bringing the cost of the recipe down to $11.03 or $.69 per ounce.

      The funny thing is, I never think about how much it costs to make these sauces. Thanks
