RIP The Large Snickers Bars!

The end is near! Beware chocolate lovers of the world that change is coming to your store shelves in 2013! Stock up now and freeze your candies!

The maker of that all time favorite candy bar, Snickers is going to reduce the size of that favorite snack of person's around the world! Mars will be reducing their candy bars to hit the 250 calorie mark.

Therefore, I wondered what the statistics of the current Snickers bar is, so I bought one out of the corner store on the way home. The bar I bought was a two ounce version with a whopping 280 calories. So, what does a downsizing mean? Well, this particular candy bar will be reduced by 11 percent to reach that goal set by Mars of 250 calories.

I ate the Snickers of course, after all, they will become rare in this size much to soon for me. Five healthy bites. (I was hungry!) So, 11 percent reduction in size means I will lose about one half of a healthy bite. I remember when candy bars were advertised as a source of instant energy. I wonder if this will affect my overall performance as I do my daily duties? Will I fall in overall productivity due to this "major" change? Only time will tell. 2013 is in the not too distant future!

Now we look at the King Size Snickers bar that comes in at 540 calories. Well, according to Mars, no more King Size bars! The candy bars will be placed in bags in various amounts of the new 250 calorie bars. So you can get the same number of calories, for about the same amount of money, but you will have to open several bars to do so.

Of course this is a "healthy" choice that Mars is making to help us control our waistlines. That is a good thing beings I assume that Mars thinks that we adults have absolutely no control over our body size and that this ploy will make people be healthier and lose weight.

Mars is not telling how the candy bars will change. They may "slim" down but stay the same length, or be thicker but shorter.

At least Mars is not messing around with that great flavor of the candy bars. The ingredients and recipe will remain the same.

Already, other candy manufactures have made this move ahead of Mars, however, I love Snickers overall, so this has a great impact on me! I hope I will be able to sleep tonight!

So, we learn that 2012 is not the end of the world as we know it, but according to the maker of my Snickers, 2013 is that end.

Well thanks for the warning! I don't eat much candy but when I do I go for the Snickers minis. But I probably eat enough to equal the big bar, LOL.

Hello urmilashukla! Great to see you. :) I will do as you, I think and eat two, therefore I will be getting "more" of those great calories. :) I appreciate you sharing the hub on facebook, for reading and commenting as well. :)

You had me nervous with that title. I rarely eat candy bars but if I have a craving I do grab a snickers bar. Thanks for sharing the news - now I will understand why I am not completely satisfied after eating my new sized snickers in 2013 :)

For the many people who can't eat their hunger fix, eating two or three of the smaller bars will become the norm. I actually think that Mars, Inc is making a smart move by doing this.

Hello alissaroberts! :) I agree, it could create an unsatisfied craving for lack of a full "dose" of Snickers! Thanks for stopping by. :)

Hello CWanamaker! I agree that Mars is being "business" smart as I feel that it will increase sales and dollars for the company as well. :) Appreciate you dropping by. :)

That sucks. I like snickers bars a lot. I will miss the large bars, but, living in Florida, the smaller ones can be eaten faster, before they melt, so that could be a good thing, at least here.

Hello Raptorcat! Sounds like a good plan to eat the smaller bars before they melt! :) Thanks for dropping by, reading and commenting. :)

That's funny, because you know people will just buy two of them. Or, maybe that is their plan to make more money. Hmmm...

My thoughts as well, Lori! It is hard for me to see a large company "really" being concerned about my waist size for health reasons, unless there is a penny or two in it to be made! :)

They can make them smaller, but it won't change the fact people will just eat more of them. Just like oreos got smaller, and we have to eat more of them.

I have to agree with those who believe people will just eat more. This all sounds good to the current food gestapo, but it will probably result in people eating another whole bar instead of just one. And with the mini bars it's easy to lose count. I don't often buy candy bars anymore. I may start making fudge to get any chocolate fix I can't find at Trader Joe's. I love their chocolate orange sticks and those wonderful chocolate oranges they sell during December. I go in right after Christmas and buy all the dark chocolate oranges they have left -- within reason. By then they are half price.

Hello WannaB Writer! Sounds like quite the deal to purchase those chocolate oranges right after Christmas! I agree that the whole concept of reducing the size of the candy bars will only have folks eating more instead of less, as you describe. Thanks for stopping by, reading and commenting!

What! They should test it out first and see if people prefer buying a smaller option or not. Don't they already sell the mini sized versions?

I think M & M company screwed the chocolate lovers. Reducing the size of candy bars and then cutting the size of the eight packs by two candy bars. I am 73 and have eaten snickers all of my life. I have 4 small snickers left and when they are gone, I will not buy another sickers bar. "You can take that to the bank"!

Hello Don! I certainly don't appreciate folks trying to make decisions for me on how much of what I can eat. They can recommend, but it is up to be to stop when I feel I have had enough. Reducing the amounts saves the companies money for sure. You can bet that the price won't go down with the lesser amounts of ingredients used. I also don't believe that any such company has our true health interests in their reasoning for doing such things.

Thanks for dropping by, reading and commenting. :)

Oh dear. It's really just a way to get you to eat another Snickers product by making one bar not quite enough. In the UK we have Snickers "Duo " which is 2 bars in 1 wrapper. It's good for sharing apparently. Although I'm buggered if I'm giving the 2nd bar to anyone else. We used to have the Snickers King Size which was about the right size but was making us all waddle around like Winston Churchill, so they dropped it.

Still, if you can't get enough of a buzz from a single bar you can always try the Ice-Cream Bar, the Biscuit, the Cookie, the Energy Bar, the Flapjack, the Peanut Butter or the Crazy Peanuts.

Either way it's still a Marathon to me. The name was changed in the UK around 1990. Was it ever called "Marathon" in the US?

    Thanks for the interesting read.

Hello, Horatio. It seems that we do have or did have a bar here called the Marathon. I don't recall if I ever indulged in one of them or not, however.

It sounds like you have some excellent alternatives to Snickers Candy Bars there that you mention. :)

Thanks for stopping by, reading and sharing in comment. :)

You seem the really care about Snickers, had one recently? Have they changed the recipe? The filling seems to be less "carmel-ly" and more of an airy "nugat" type filling like a milky way. The horror, the horror!

Maybe the are trying to get us to buy a new candy bar that is yet to be released, lol. I did eat a couple of the Halloween size ones recently (cheating on the kids, lol) and they did not taste too different to me that I could tell.
