The Frisco

In central Austin, in central Texas, on a local road called Burnet Road, you will find a quaint cafe known as The NightHawk Frisco Shop. In 1953, Harry Akin's opened the doors of The Frisco as part of the famous NightHawk Restaurant chain. The Frisco Shop was the most casual venue in the chain. The Frisco stands today as a reminder of the Night Hawk chain.

Once located at the intersection of Burnet and Koenig Lane, the Frisco has moved just up the street into a newly renovated building South of the Justin Lane and Burnet Road intersection. The eatery doubled its space, increased its parking capacity, and improved its appearance as a result of this move. The Frisco draws customers of all ages, but it continues to serve an aging population in Central Austin. Many of the elderly residents in the area come to enjoy the Daily Specials like Beef Tips on Rice or Pot Roast and Vegetables. Yes, you see a lot of white hair if you visit, but remember that this restaurant has been around for YEARS!

As you enter the building, notice the extensive counter that runs the length of the building. The counter provides extra seating during crowded meals and provides a boundary for the long and extensive serving area. Brightly lit and touting a cafe atmosphere, eating here is fun!

The Food

The Frisco serves great food! This restaurant is known for its Frisco Burger. Akins once raised his own corn-fed beef to provide quality meat for his Shop. The extensive menu includes a Daily Special, steaks, and burgers. Favorites include the enchiladas and country biscuits. I have sampled many of the items on the menu and have not found one that I did not like.

The famous Frisco pies are beautifully displayed in a glass case at the counter. They brag on their Chocolate Meringue, Banana Creme, Apple Pie, and Coconut Cream. My favorite is the Coconut Cream Pie. It is absolutely the best I have tasted anywhere. I usually split a piece when I order it. The waitress will divide it for you so you don't have to fight over who has the bigger piece. Be sure and save room for dessert!

A Recent Visit To The Frisco

The Frisco Shop is not near our home, we live twenty minutes away. Today we were in the area and stopped by for Sunday lunch. The place was very crowded but our wait was minimal! The menu has been extended. We were pleasantly surprised to see more selection for appetizers as well as entrees! My Sunday special was pot roast with mashed potatoes and fried okra. Yum! My husband chose the meatloaf with potatoes and green beans! Our food was excellent and so was the service!

The restaurant has become more like a cafe with a variety of selection and a hint of old fashioned choices added to the menu, leggs devised eggs. Go check it out! You won't be disappointed.

The Frisco Restaurant has closed!

The owners have recently retired and closed the shop. Unfortunately Austin rents continue to rise and were a contributing factor in the owner's decision. Another one of our favorite places to eat has closed its doors. ☹️
