Organic Food

In our society today it is so important to know the quality of the foods we are eating and feeding our family. It has been said that the average Americans consumes nearly 1/2 gallon of pesticides a year. Apples are a number one culprit. Not just to skin but into the meat of the fruit itself as the chemicals are added as they are grown. I have also been reading a lot about organic coffee and how much non organic contains chemicals .My next splurge will probably to costcos web page to order some organic that is highly rated by it's user.

Here is a list of the foods along with a recipe to clean them as much as possible . Hopefully this will keep your family healthier.

The Dirty Dozen A List to Memorize

THE DIRTY DOZEN

There are 12 foods that you SHOULD always BUY ORGANIC. They are:

Celery

Potatoes

Spinach

Rasberries

Grapes

Apples

Blueberries

Strawberries

Cherries

Leafy greens

Pears

Peaches

These foods tend to have an abnormally high amount of feces or pesticides found on them and have been recognized as foods that are very important to buy organic. As a mother and caregiver I would tend to concentrate to keeping these ion a list or memorizing them and using specially made or

If you are not able to buy these organic you can make homemade fruit and vegetable cleaner

Fruit and Vegetable Cleaner

If you are not able to buy these organic you can make homemade fruit and vegetable cleaner

- 1 cup water

- 1 cup white vinegar

- 1 TB baking soda

- 1/2 lemon

Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray your produce. Let the solution sit on your fruits and veggies for about 5 minutes before rinsing it off. Vinegar is anti-bacterial and lemon is a natural astringent

Farm Raised Salmon

Organic Milk and Meat

Along with fruits and vegetables a lot has been written about using organic milk and free range chicken and eggs.

Studies have shown it is important to purchase milk for your growing children that does not come from animals fed artificial hormones to increase their milk production. I have been able to find hormone free milk at a discount store in my area.

Hormones are passed onto our children and can cause our daughters especially to go through premature signs of adolescence such as breast development and the start of menses.

As far as free range meat and eggs are concerned. Some studies show it makes little difference weather chickens are kept in coups of allowed to move in and out of their nesting area.

As a nurse and mother I am more concerned with meat that has been fed grain with artificial hormones added and also farm fed fish which has also found to have high levels of chemicals.

It is important for us to become educated consumers to protect our food supply.
