The Top 5 Reasons Why I Shop Online

Updated on June 6, 2012

Maybe These Are Good Reasons for You, Too

I don’t know how many of you shop online but I talk to many people who do and, it seems, that number is growing. If you don’t currently shop online, are there reasons why you don’t? Or, perhaps it’s just something you’ve never considered before? Well, if you have never considered it in the past, please follow along with me while I tell you about the top 5 reasons why I shop online.

I Can Shop When I Want to Shop

If you’re like me and you work a full time job, your free time is extremely valuable. I, for one, treasure the time I am not working at my full time job and the absolute LAST thing I want to do is spend 45 minutes (or more) waiting in line to check out items I wish to purchase! Let’s face it, at certain times of the year, you can literally waste an entire day shopping for the stuff you need or even risk your safety in your favorite department stores while you try to take advantage of those coupons and / or sales. If I shop online, I can do it at my convenience…even in my jammies if I so desire…and I don’t have to juggle other activities to make time to get my stuff. I can shop 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at my leisure and from the comfort and safety of my own home.

Save Money by Comparing Prices

Consider another of the top 5 reasons to shop online and let me ask you a question. How many times have you purchased an item, perhaps a pair of shoes or a TV for example, and felt you paid a reasonable price for it only to come home, pick up the newspaper and see that two other stores had the same thing on sale for less than you paid? And, maybe at least one of those stores was closer to home which could have saved you even more in gas to go there. If you’re like me, you have been down that road many more times than you’d like to admit! If you shop online, you can shop and compare your desired items from multiple stores and take advantage of sales, some of which are unadvertised. This comparison shopping allows you to get the most for your hard-earned dollars as well as helps you to shop more efficiently. When you find the deal that suits your budget, then you can pay for it online with a debit or credit card and have it shipped to your front door! Some online stores will give your free or significantly discounted shipping prices that may still result in paying less money for that pair of shoes or that blouse or shirt than you would have paid at the local department store with much less stress. Let me tell you – it just doesn’t get much better than that!

Avoiding the Crowds

Another big thing with me when I am shopping is the crowd factor. I am one who has actually grocery shopped at Wal-Mart at 3 AM to avoid the crowds! Now, while I realize this is just a little extreme, it does emphasize my point about the crowds. If you have limited time to shop, you will likely just want to get in and out of the store as quickly as possible so that you can go on to the next thing on your schedule. I have discovered that this is a very efficient goal to have but it is extremely unrealistic this day and age. And, since there are few department stores open at 3 AM, your carefully planned schedule will be dreadfully inadequate most of the time. If you choose to shop online, your can shop those same department stores without aggravation of the crowds. While it is true that you can’t feel the fabric or smell the fragrance of those candles if you shop online, I seriously doubt that you are utilizing your sense of touch and smell when you are surrounded by others who are reaching for the same products at your favorite department store. This Top 5 reason can be a HUGE issue when you’re shopping around the holidays, too.

Rising Gas Prices

I don’t think anyone enjoys paying those prices at the pump once or twice a week. As the gas prices continue to increase, I find myself mapping out my shopping trips and other errands so that I can travel as efficiently as possible to be as frugal with my gas as I can. Between the time saved and the gas saved by online shopping, I can frequently get all of my non-perishable and non-food items for less online than if I run from store to store, fight the crowds and stand in long lines. It takes a bit of planning but, for me, it is certainly worth the effort!

Buying Gifts for Out of Town Family or Friends?

This is another one of the major time and money saving top 5 reasons to shop online. Every year, there are graduations, weddings, baby births and birthdays and you can’t always get away to personally deliver your chosen gift to the recipient. Everything is so electronic these days; bridal registries, baby registries and even graduation registries can be found online. It’s pretty easy to locate the recipient’s list of desired or needed items, purchase them and even have them shipped directly to them. The items can even be gift wrapped if you wish. You could browse the list and comparison shop to locate the best deal for your budget and do it at your convenience from the comfort and safety of your own living room.

Well, have I given you some food for thought? There are many more reasons why you benefit from shopping online and I’ll bet you can add quite a few to my top 5 reasons. The bottom line is this: whatever the reasons, there are definitely purchasing and shopping circumstances and conditions that lend themselves to being done online. Consider this option the next time you need to shop.
