The Wonderful Avocado (Aguacate) as Food
Mexico is America's alternate farm basket for fruits and vegetables. During the winter, most of the US produce comes from Mexico where it can be grown. While the farmlands in the US are being tilled and prepped for the net season, tons of produce comes across the border.
There are 8,000 avocado farms in Michoacan, Mexico, and as a whole Mexico exports 45% of the world's avocados. As a food, it is a healthy food one can ea by itself or usually in salads. Avocados have a higher soluble fiber content than any other fresh fruit or vegetable, and contain more than 20 vitamins and minerals. They are high in monounsaturated fats, raising the HDL, or "good," cholesterol and lowering the evil LDL.
Of course, making guacamole for chips is always a must. But what other things can you do with avocados?
One incredible dessert is avocado ice cream made from several (3-4) mashed avocados, one cup of heavy cream, 1\2 cup of sugar, one cup of milk. Place in a bowl and blend very well, then, freeze for several hours. If you make this, wait until the price is around 50 cents for one. Another great item is the avocado smoothie. Simply use one avocado, two cups of milk, one cup of plain yogurt, a few tablespoons of sugar. Put all this into a blender and mix. Enjoy the drink.
