Updated on September 27, 2012

Although not really a nut, the seed or the fruit of coconut is actually a drupe. The coconut fruit is truly versatile since it has a wide range of uses. The fruit’s water can be a refreshing and healthy drink, and at the same time you can extract oil and (coconut) milk from its meat. The coconut oil and milk are vital ingredients in Asian cuisines especially the Philippines and India.

If the fermentation process takes more days and it undergoes distillation process it will transform into a more potent yet good tasting wine which is the “lambanog” or coconut vodka.

The coconut is self-sufficient – the coconut seed can get all of its nutrients inside its shell until it emerges and grow into a tree.

The coconut boast of the healthiest natural sugar in the world – The coconut sap can be heated until it transform into coconut sugar, which is a popular alternative to cane sugar. The coconut sugar is low in glycemic index and safe to use for people with diabetics.

Nice and informative hub. Coconut is very popular in India. Especially, in southern India, no recipe, whether, sweet or salted is complete, without having coconut in it--in some form or the other. Your hub has provided some additional information about coconuts. Thanks for sharing. And all the best for your HubChallenge.
