We had family in town this past weekend. While searching for a fun place to eat, we chose to visit Threadgill's Restaurant downtown, 301 W. Riverside Drive. Because it was a Monday evening at 6:00 p.m., we had front row parking.
The decor for this eatery is not fancy, but the food is outstanding! If you like good home cooking, you will enjoy a meal at Threadgill's. The menu is extensive with a long list of vegetables to choose from as well as homestyle favorites like meatloaf, chicken-fried steak and chicken livers.
Every meal begins with a big basket of fresh dinner rolls and corn muffins. Be sure to ask for honey, it tastes great on the rolls. We began our meal with some delicious fried green tomatoes.I had the vegetable plate with five selections. My husband ordered meatloaf and loved it. We split a peach cobbler for dessert, yum! The rest of our party ordered rhubarb pie.
The Restaurant Decor
On the ceiling, there were several interesting antique items suspended in the air for decor, some were rather large. A bulletin board placed near the entrance lists the vegetables available from local area farms. A neon-lit jukebox stood against one wall, adding a bit of nostalgia to the scene. Near the cash register, a display case of t-shirts advertize the business. One member from our party made a souvenir purchase.
The meal was tasty and our experience at Threadgill's was enjoyable. I highly recommend Threadgill's as a favored place for your next home cooked meal. There is plenty of parking and seating for everyone. I'm looking forward to my next visit!
North Lamar Location

Threadgill's Restaurant has two locations. In addition to the downtown location described above, the original location at 6416 N. Lamar is another option for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We recently visited the North Lamar location for dinner on a Wednesday evening. Parking was easily accessible. There was an enjoyable live band during dinner and great food. The atmosphere was homey and inviting. The service was excellent. Enjoy a great meal at Threadgill's! You will remember it for a long time!
This Location Has Closed
Due to financial reasons, the downtown Threadgill's location closed in December 2018. The costs of operating the business in downtown Austin became too costly. Be sure to visit the North Lamar location for the same great food, service and entertainment.
