The Cost of Making Italian Seasoning Mix

Updated on December 15, 2011

I wasn’t surprised to find that the cost of making your own italian seasoning mix is higher than buying it. Obviously, the spices you use and the quantity of each will determine the final price. But you may want to make your own to control the spices that are in your mix.

I’ve listed three different recipes to give you an idea of the cost. Since these recipes all yield different amounts, I’ve compared them by giving per ounce cost.

I've included the cost of my ingredients at the bottom of the article so you can compare to prices in your area.

Recipe 1

Yield 14 T

2 T Basil $.95

2 T Marjoram $2.28

2 T Oregano $.87

2 T Rosemary $1.73

2 T Sage $.74

2 T Savory $.32

2 T Thyme $1.05

Total Cost $7.93

Cost Per Ounce $4.41

Cost to buy per ounce $3.33

Recipe 2

This is the same as recipe 1 but without the savory.

Yield 12 T

Total Cost $7.61

Cost Per Ounce $5.06

Cost to buy per ounce $3.33

Recipe 3

This is the same as recipe 2 but without the sage.

Yield 10 T

Total Cost $6.87

Cost Per Ounce $5.07

Cost to buy per ounce $3.33

Cost of my ingredients
