Make a Delicious Breakfast Smoothie for You and Your Kids
One for Recipe for Adults. One Recipe for Toddlers.
The following two smoothie recipes are ones I use regularly. The first smoothie recipe, which is the one I drink every morning, I have used for years. The second smoothie recipe I recently put together for my son, who is 28-months-old and has been sent home from daycare numerous times with loose stools. The smoothie I make for him, he loves, and it binds him up pretty well.
- 1-2 Cups Apple Juice
- 3-5 heaping tablespoons Fat Free Yogurt
- 1 Large Banana (peeled)
- 1 cup Frozen Fruit, pineapple, mangos, strawberries
All measurements are approximate. Blend the above ingredients in a blender for as long as it takes to liquify the fruit. Usually I let the fruit sit in the apple juice for five minutes, which helps with the blending process. The nice thing about smoothies is that you can alter the ingredients to your preference, but this recipe is the basis for an excellent smoothie. Makes about 24-32 ounces.
The Toddler, Loose Stool Solution Smoothie
- 1/2 cup of rice milk
- 1 banana (peeled)
- 3-5 heaping tablespoons non-fat yogurt
- 1/2 cup of tart cherries or pineapple or strawberries to taste
These ingredients blend really well since the frozen ingredients don't dominate. My son has really taken to this smoothie even though he had been devouring the first one. However, the apple juice in the first one isn't helpful for loose stools. The yogurt and banana in this one really help and it's rich and creamy and toddler-friendly.
Note: I use a fairly inexpensive Oster blender, which received a very good rating in Consumer Reports. So far, so good. It handles everything well.
Added note: I bought a Ninja blender system recently and it works really well. The Ninja blender with the motor on top recently received Consumer Reports highest rating, beating out the Vitamix blender.
