Hoe to make a Decorated Waterfall Cake

Updated on April 10, 2012

This is the finished product. The cake ended up weighing about 50 pounds when I was done. My daughter wanted an outdoors type of birthday cake. This is what we came up with.

We started with a sheet cake. I found the biggest aluminum pan I could find at Walmart (it was a roasting pan) and continued upwards with graduating round cake pans to create the hill for the waterfall to flow from. The rocks, animals, and trees were made with fondant. Butter-cream chocolate icing. Butter-cream icing for the rest. I did add a gel icing for the water. The kids helped with some of the animals. This took me about a week to make. I made all the fondant ahead of time and the cake the day before. The day of the party I spent about 8 hours putting it all together. But it was so much fun for all of us.

Thank you all. A friend of mine taught me a few tricks on cake decorating and I just ran with it. It's funny what you can do when you're doing it for someone you love. My daughter decided she wasn't a little girl anymore and was done with pinks and purples and wanted and "outdoorsy cake" this is what we came up with. It weighed about 50 pounds! But it was so much fun.
