Ok so this morning I woke up with this craving for Waffles...pulling out my ancient waffle iron I began to wonder just where, when, why, and how did this food get it's beginning...funny what goes through one's mind first thing in the morning once you are retired.

So I went to the computer and Google'd Waffle Iron beginnings. Wow these fine breakfast cakes come from way the heck back...I mean like...somewhere around the 14th century and back then the patterns varied from coat of arms to religious patterns. Today we have hearts to the states and so many more.

Waffles were always eaten for breakfast on special days, when I was growing up and I think the iron I have now was used then...it is OLD. It is yellow , square and heavy.

Today and for many years, I read, they we eaten for dinner as well. Waffles and fried chicken in the south was a favorite and I have been seeing on the food programs it still is.

Waffles are great for deserts too, piled with fresh fruits, whipped cream, ice cream, frostings, chocolate syrup, Ice cream cones , well anything your imagination can come up with.

They can be savory or sweet, healthy or not. Served with syrup, jelly, butter (of course) peanut butter, almond butter, as a sandwich, grilled cheese or just eaten plain.

I like to make mine with organic flour and several healthy seeds, nuts or raisins, and top them with the fruit that is in season, but mostly and honestly I like then hot, butter melting into all the little squares and maple syrup running off of them.

My waffle iron doubles as a Panini press too, just turn the plates over and they are flat, so you can make grilled cheese, or any kind of pressed goodie you want. I am impressed it is still working so well and still around. They used to make things to last, not to throw away.

There are many kinds of waffle irons out there today...thought it would be fun to see a few....and also wonder how many just buy the frozen ones in a box, then toast in a toaster??? They are so much fun to make. :O)

Well off to make my waffles and have my breakfast, sorta late; but oh well once you a retired person you can do what you want, when you want...God Bless...G-Ma Johnson

Do you make your own waffles ?

William F. Torpey...Wow... they sound so good, I always had those store bought ice cream sandwiches, but I think you gave me a great idea for my BD Party...Waffle Ice Cream sandwiches instead of cake....:O) Yes it is hard for me also to believe restaurants ( unless gourmet) don't bother to make homemade waffles...Maybe we can start the waffle ball rolling AGAIN...Thanks for the comment...:O) Hugs G-Ma

When I think of waffles I always remember the wonderful fresh ice cream sandwiches they made at the 5 & 10 at Getty Square in Yonkers way back in the .40s. They had a little waffle iron right there near the door at Palisade Avenue in the Square. To this day I just don't understand why they don't sell ice cream sandwiches on fresh waffles everywhere people gather. I stopped at a Waffle House some years ago while on a trip to Tulsa, Okla., and was extremely disappointed when they told me that they did not serve ice cream sandwiches. Waffles without ice cream? Unbelievable!!

I had no idea that one of my favorite treats has been around since the 14th Century. It does make since though. They put coat of arms on everything.

Add a handle and you could play ping pong with my mom's waffles. My wife, arlene, made waffle not only as breakfasts, but also as deserts.
