My Comfort Home-Cooked Meals for Cold Weather

Updated on December 11, 2019

A homemaker who loves cooking for her family. During her spare time, she loves reading and looking for a new recipe to try.

Home-Cooked Meals

I love a home-cooked meal particularly something that is fresh and has a traditional background to it. I have cooked many types of traditional Malay cuisine before, but at the same time, I love trying new recipes. When I was growing up in Perak (a southern state in Malaysia), I was influenced a lot by Malay and Asian cuisine that is cooked by my mother. There is nothing that compares to a home-cooked meal, right? It always tastes better.

Cold Weather Makes Us Hungry

When the weather gets cold, as it has recently here in Utah, it's time to prepare meals that are warm and delicious. The cold weather also makes us feel hungry so easy. So what a perfect time to prepare something fully for the tummy! I have been cooking these dishes for a while, but, I adjusted the flavors and the ingredients so, it's coordinate with the seasonal delicacy. Winter is all about comfort food.

Comfort Food

For me, comfort food means comfort and simple preparation. However, it doesn't mean I will make it too easy. I like to make the food I cook tastier. Trust me, it looks more appetizing and your family would love it. For example, if I'm making fried rice, I will pair this dish with shrimp, eggs, or chicken. I will also add vegetables such as carrot, cabbage, broccoli, and much more. Be creative with the food that you're making. When I cook instant ramen, for instance, I like to make it merrier. So I add some protein such as eggs or chicken, and I also add vegetables (mushroom, green mustard, and tomatoes).

I thought of sharing my favorite home-cooked meals that I made for my family during cold weather.

The shrimp tempura is delicious! I want to make this more during winter. To get the right tempura batter, make sure you follow the instruction on the packet (if you using a store-bought flour mix). I love eating fried noodles in a bowl and I like using chopsticks while eating the noodles.

1. Shrimp Tempura with Spicy Fried Noodles

I made this dish out of my curiosity about the tempura flour I bought at the Asian store. I thought what a quick way to cook shrimp tempura with the instant flour mix. I don't have to spend time making the batter than just add water to it, dump the shrimp, and fry. Voila! I would encourage working moms to get it (tempura flour) at the store, it's cheap and fast. You can pair the shrimp tempura with rice or ramen. I decided to have with spicy fried noodles.

The chicken broth is a star of the dish. Usually, I will use a whole chicken that I cut into a small pieces and throw in the pot and cook for a while. My family enjoy the chicken noodles with hard-boiled eggs, greens, and spicy sambal. During winter, chicken noodles is one of the best comfort food to eat!

2. Chicken Noodles

This is a must dish to cook for winter. The warm and delicious bone broth from the chicken is perfect to warm your stomach. I never thought that after I moved to the United States I'd be making this because, in Malaysia, chicken noodles or mi sup is famous and it's easy to find at the restaurant.

Fried rice or nasi goreng is my all-time favorite comfort food. It's quick and easy with simple ingredients needed. This vegetable fried rice is delicious. Usually, I cook the rice earlier and let it cool completely. Cold rice is the best for making fried rice.

3. Fried Rice

In Malaysia and Indonesia, fried rice is known as nasi goreng, and it is one of my favorite comfort foods. It is very simple but delicious. I have to admit that it is so tempting when you're feeling hungry. The best thing about fried rice is it's quick and easy. All you need is cooked rice and some other ingredients that you already have in the fridge. Fried rice is a dish that is endlessly flexible; you can prepare it with your own style.

4. Malaysian Curry Noodles

One of my favorite comfort foods is curry noodles. In Malaysia, this dish is very popular, and you can find it at the local hawker stalls and restaurants. One of the best features of this dish is that it contains all of the important flavors and tastes: spicy, creamy, sweet, and sour. It's perfect for the cold weather. If you have a leftover broth, save it and have it the next day for lunch.

This spicy ramen is delicious! I love the chewy noodles with the spicy broth. I added some tomatoes, and mushroom to the broth. Ramen is perfect for cold weather. It's quick and easy. However, I like to improve the ramen with extra ingredients added to it.

5. Instant Ramen

Yes, instant ramen noodles are one of my favorites to make during winter. It's cheap and fast. However, I like to improve the ramen rather than just have it plain and simple from the packet. Here's what I did. I saute sliced shallots and garlic with a little bit of oil in the pan. Then, I follow the instructions on the packet. I also like to add hard-boiled eggs, chicken, and vegetables to the ramen. It's perfect! I don't have a recipe for this but, I know you can make the ramen tastes delicious.

6. Pizza

Believe it or not, pizza is the most famous comfort food in the United States. Therefore, I had to put this to the list. Actually, I like to make a homemade pizza because it's cheaper and I can put extra toppings without extra charge. Ain't that great? To save time, I'd make the dough earlier and save it in the freezer. I love mushrooms, bell peppers, marinara sauce, and cheese on the top of the pizza.

7. Chicken Tikka Masala

To cook chicken tikka masala requires time and can be a little bit tedious to prepare, but, it is so worth it. I recommended cooking this dish on the weekend where you can prepare the ingredients earlier and have it ready for dinner. For a perfect chicken tikka masala, you must marinate the chicken so, the spices will absorb and you will get the authentic flavor from it. I like having chicken tikka with naan bread or basmati rice.

Thank you, Liz. It's cold in Utah but, it's not as bad as majority Midwest states in America. I'm a bit lucky here. Comfort food makes me calm and relaxes while embracing this cold weather. I hope you will get warm and comfort food as well, Liz.
