Where To Get Chopsticks?

Perhaps you are having an Asian themed party. Maybe you spent a few years living in China or Japan and working as an English teacher. Or maybe you backpacked through Southeast Asia and enjoyed the experience of eating with chopsticks. Perhaps you traveled through Asian countries for business or pleasure now that you are back home you want a proper set of chopsticks. Or it could also be that you simply love Asian culture and Asian foods and you want to have a Chinese or Japanese dinner set to enjoy at home. Whatever your reasons you may currently be asking “where to get chopsticks?” or “Where to buy chopsticks?” Or perhaps what kind of chopsticks should you get.

What Kind of Chopsticks Do you Want to Buy?

You may not be aware of it but you have several options when it comes to buying chopsticks. The option you choose will largely depend on your needs. It may also depend on whether you are buying them for yourself or as a gift. You will find a variety of options including:

Disposable Chopsticks

Stainless Steel Chopsticks

Plastic Chopsticks

Bamboo Chopsticks

Decorative Wooden Chopsticks

Chopstick Gift Sets

Chopsticks for Children

Disposable Chopsticks

Disposable chopsticks are great if you are having a party or any single occasion where you will need a lot of chopsticks for several people. If you are having a themed party you may want all of your guests to having their own pair of chopsticks. In a situation like this cheap disposable chopsticks are probably the best way to go. Disposable chopsticks are also great for crafts. If you're interested in chopsticks only for personal use at home disposable chopsticks may not be the best idea. This is especially true if you plan to use them often or if you want something that looks elegant.

Stainless Steel Chopsticks

More environmentally friendly than disposable chopsticks are stainless steel chopsticks. Easy to clean, stainless steel chopsticks can simply be thrown into the dishwasher along with your forks and knives. Since you reuse them instead of throwing them away like with disposable chopsticks they are much better for the environment. One disadvantage to stainless steel is that many people claim that they are not as easy to grip and hold. They are also not as visually attractive as other options.

Decorative Chopsticks

Plastic Chopsticks

Plastic chopsticks much like stainless steel ones are reusable. Because of this plastic chopsticks are also better for the environment than disposable wooden chopsticks. An advantage is that plastic chopsticks often have decorative designs so they may be more visually pleasing than the stainless steel ones. A disadvantage is that plastic may not last as long as stainless steel. Plastic chopsticks might warp or the color might fade if you wash them in the dishwasher so you may have to simply wash them by hand. Like with the stainless steel variety some people claim that plastic chopsticks are not as easy to grip as wooden ones.

Decorative Wooden Chopsticks

Decorative wooden chopsticks have a sense of class and style. You reuse them so you don't have to worry about harming the environment as with disposable ones. Because they are decorative these chopsticks have the added advantage that they can be displayed while not in use. The wood feel is often preferable over the feel of plastic or stainless steel. Being wood also makes them easier to grip. A disadvantage is that like wooden spoons, wooden chopsticks may warp and crack if you throw them in the dishwasher. Instead you will want to clean them by hand.

Bamboo Chopsticks

Like decorative wooden chopsticks, ones made from bamboo have a sense of class and can be displayed when not in use. They have all the same advantages of wooden ones. Again it is probably best to wash these by hand.

Chopstick Gift Sets

If you are looking for a gift set for a friend or loved one you have different options. Some sets are intended for travel use. Others are designed for use at home. You have a wide range from stainless steel and plastic to wood and bamboo. The last two usually have decorative designs. Most Chopstick gift sets come with six pairs of chopsticks. Some sets will also include a rice paddle for serving rice. Many also include hopstick holders. These holders give people a place to rest their chopsticks while they are eating. You can set them down without the ends of the chopsticks having to touch the table or anything else. Alternatively, without these you can simply lean your chopsticks on the edge of a plate or lay them across a bowl. Chopstick gift sets can be a great gift idea and make a wonderful addition to a kitchen or dining room.

Fun and Sophistication

Chopsticks for Children

There are many chopsticks designed for children. These often are more colorful. Most will be designed with a hinge holding them together to make it easier for the child to hold and use. Some adults would find this useful as well. These can add fun to a meal. Your child may enjoy the experience of using chopsticks and will find the ease of use encouraging.

Chinese Night at Home

A set of chopsticks makes a great investment, much like a traditional western dining set used for formal occasions. With a chopsticks set you can enjoy Asian themed family nights. Cook a few of your favorite Chinese dishes like Gongboa Ji Ding (Kung Poa Chicken) or Qing Jiao Rou Si (Shredded Pork and Green Peppers). Or if you don't love cooking, you can order take out from your favorite Chinese restaurant and disguise it as a meal you cooked yourself. No one but you and me will know the difference and I wont tell anyone. Set the table with the dishes in the middle along with a large bowl of rice. Give everyone their own small bowl and a pair of chopsticks and let everyone help themselves. Play some Chinese music in the background. You can turn normal, traditional family gatherings into something fun and themed. Or turn date night into a trip around the world.

Chopsticks are definitely a utensil for lovers of Asian cuisine to use, in my experience. This is a great resource!

I've seen chopsticks sold everywhere they sell cutlery. My grocery store sells cheap wooden chopsticks in the spot where they sell plastic forks, spoons, and knives. Usually I use them to eat noodles or bite-sized food, but I love using them to cook. It's so easy to flip something in a pan with chopsticks, or use them to keep a pot's lid slightly ajar.
