Zapiekanka is Poland’s take on pizza. A long strip of bread topped with melted cheese, any other ingredients that are lying around and sauce - usually tomato ketchup. They are sold from small kiosks, hot, filling and cheap making them popular with late night party goers. As they are cheap, versatile and easy to prepare they are also a staple dish for students.

Cook Time

Prep time: 10 min
Cook time: 5 min
Ready in: 15 min
Yields: 1-4

  • baguette
  • sliced mushrooms
  • chopped onions
  • grated cheese
  • tomato ketchup

  1. Pre-heat the grill and slice the baguette length ways. Fry the mushrooms and onions then put them on the baguette. Put the grated cheese on top. Place under the grill until the cheese is melted. Coat generously with ketchup and serve.

As with regular pizza you can be as imaginative as you like with the toppings. Zapiekanka tastes great with a side serving of Polish beer. Zywiec, Tyskie and Warka are popular brands. Bon Appétit, or as they say in Poland: Smacznego!
