An Innovative Cookbook: Flavor Secrets by Chef Lynn Miller
I've enjoyed this cookbook a lot, as I've cooked Chef Lynn's recipes. I've given copies to friends, too.
Flavor Secrets has more than 140 recipes, as you'd expect from a cookbook. It also has lots of background information about the how and why of cooking. Every one of the 12 chapters has a lesson to go along with the main topic, from Appetizers and Main Dishes, to Salads, Sandwiches and Desserts.
Chapters at the end fill in some of the extras that will set your cooking apart: Stocks, Sauces, Salad Dressings, Garnishes and Decorative skills.
You can use this book to refine your skills and "kick it up a notch" as they say.
Who Is Chef Lynn Miller?
Chef Lynn was a serious home cook, who was so serious that eventually she went to culinary school. Her passion for food led her to become a chef.
She has taught many students in small classes, and through her online and video programs. Her experience learning on her own, and in culinary school give her the perspective to know how to help students progress in their cooking skills.
(I've added links to some of her videos below, so you can meet her for yourself.)
I met Chef Lynn several years ago, and have enjoyed eating her food, cooking her recipes, and even trying out different presentations with the china and dinnerware. (We both have serious collections of dinnerware.)
Why I Love This Book
The more I work with her book, the more I learn about how to tweak my cooking, and this teaching cookbook has helped me gain confidence to venture outside the lines of recipes, to try different things and make a dish my own. This is the kind of cookbook that you may well want to read from cover to cover, and be excited to tackle new dishes as you do.
How You Will Benefit From This Book
If you're looking to learn more about cooking, from an experienced chef, then Flavor Secrets could be for you.
Take your cooking to a higher level, in time for a special holiday dinner or seasonal entertaining. Just a few tips from Chef Lynn can help you impress your family and friends, and make your meal tastier.
Understand the how and why of ingredients and techniques. There are hundreds of tips in each chapter (the Flavor Secrets), including a seciton at the beginning of each summarizing the most important things to understand about that food topic
Explore new dishes that might have been intimidating, and gain confidence in making it. Perhaps you've always wanted to make your own pasta, or present a classic rack of lamb, or cook up a big batch of old-fashioned peanut brittle.
This book will help you with all these goals. It's a cooking class, for the comfort of your own home kitchen, and you get to eat your homework!

Cook along with Chef Lynn in her professional kitchen!
I've been there, and I can vouch for her cooking, and how well she explains the ingredients and techniques.
Chef Lynn sometimes says,
"Don't ask me how I know this!"
That's an inside tip, based on real life experience.
(Things can happen in the kitchen.)
