If someone has food on their mouth or on their teeth, should you tell them or not?

This is always a very tricky one. Trying to help without being rude or embarrassing the person. Hwo do you deal with it?

I think you should tell them. Just tell him/her, sensible persons never mind such things.

I feel you absolutely should tell them.  Pull them aside, especially if they're someone you're not close to and it's not a private situation.  If it's someone you're close to, or it's a private situation, they'll be much less embarrassed if you tell them than if you let them walk around that way all day.

I think you should tell them. It'd be better for them to bear a little pain from you than being insulted and laughed at behind their back by others.

Yes, unless you really want them to look stupid. You should snap a picture first.

Honestly, personally, it depends on who. Where I come from we have a lot of persons who get offended quite easily.

Sometimes it's just funny to see someone walking around with a big glob of mustard on their cheek.
I guess I would say that it depends on my mood.

I think if someone you're close to, then mention it.  If the person isn't someone you're close to maybe it's better to say nothing and let him think there's at least the chance nobody saw it before he did.

I would definitely tell them because I would want to know if it happened to me. I'd make a joke of it and say something like "are you keeping that for later?"

Depends on the relation and also depends on my mood ...

But yeah this is the perfect material for leg pulling ... lollzz

Absolutely. I would think anyone would want to know this. However, it would depend if it was your best friend or total stranger? Either way, I think I would certainly mention this to that person, but that's just me. However, if I was on a subway train and it was someone who looked nasty, Ummm, NO, I probably wouldn't mention it to them. If it happened to be a very nicely groomed attractive male or female, YES, I think I would mention it for sure. :-)

Yes, but only in private. I hate coming home and realizing that I had something in my teeth and no one told me. But I also remember this one time where a girl announced that I had something on the corner of my mouth right in the middle of class. I wouldn't have minded if she had told me before class when there was no one else around...

I would kind of make eye contact with the person then point (on my face) where they have the smudge. Its like the universal gesture for telling someone they have a smudge or food on their face.

After someone tells me I have a piece of food between my teeth I feel self-conscious about my smile for the rest of the day. If it were me, I would say don't say anything to the person and let them smile proud.

I think I would be embarassed if I told someone if they food on their mouth or in their teeth.  I deal with by trying to put up with the problem and tell them what they need to do.

I would tell them in a polite way so that they don't get embarrassed. It's ruder once they find out that you let them embarrass themselves walking around with food on their teeth.

  19. ecepero profile image59
    eceperoposted 12 years ago

of course. If you didn't tell them they would later find out and possibly be more embarrassed. This could also give them a horrible first impression if they are going in for a job interview or first date and whatnot.

Loads of great answers here. It seems the general opinion is to actual tell the person rather than allow them to walk around like that. This tends to happen often and personally I prefer to let the person know. I do it subtly by just telling them and then looking away so as to give them the space and dignity to clean it up. Thanks everyone. Please read my sci fi stories if you are interested. Cheers. The Ski

Please people, if I have something on my face or in my teeth please, please, please tell me. I would definitely tell you. I would rather have someone tell me than to go all day, or at least til i got a chance to look in the mirror, to find something crusty and disgusting  on my face, and know that people have been looking at me saying what in the world? And then of course I would have a flash back about the cute guy who was staring at me and i winked at him only to realize he was looking at the after effects of lunch on my face. How embarrassing. Not that that has ever happened.smile

Yes, if you know them. If it is friends or family then, you should. And you should tell them privately and in a casual way. If it is a customer or patron of your employment, you shouldn't say anything at all.

Most definitely tell him or her.  No matter what the situation or mood.  It is always less embarrassing to be told before others see it.  Everyone has a situation like that every now and then where they get a little sauce on their face or something, so just as kindly and discreetly as possible, let them know so they may fix it. There is no need to let your mood be detrimental to another.

A number of years ago, a little girl of about 8 or 9 told me I had lipstick on my teeth.  I did feel embarrased to be told about such a silly thing, but I was grateful to her for telling me about something that would have looked even sillier as the day went by and frankly I don't think the adults would have made mention of it.

In my mind I go between thinking it doesn't bother me so why bother telling them, and remembering that moment when they may lightly embarrassingly curse me, in front of the mirror, for not informing them before too much of the night had past. If I sense they would want to know I try to tell them.

Yes! The key is to know when and how to let them know. Make a conscious effort to discretely let them know and they should be grateful. While, it could be a potentially embarrassing moment for them, they will recognize that you have saved them from walking around talking to who knows how many other people with food in their teeth before someone else had the guts to say something.

Since I work in the hospitailty industry, looks are very important so it helps for all of us to look out for each other. But then again, if we wanted to play a little prank on another team member, just pretend everything is normal and see what happens.

If the person is a friend, yes.  I would prefer to be informed of something like this by a friend rather than a stranger or continue to have the bit of food between my teeth.  If I don't know the person with food between their teeth, however, I will not mention it as I find the situation to be too socially awkward.

I know and deeply respect a few people that can often be seen with a white food particle just inside of their lip. Especially after a recent meal. I've just come to see this as a part of how they often look.

I think it's very important not to embarrass people in any way. If the benefit to the person out weighs the embarrassment in some very important way, then maybe I would tell them.

Yes...it's very person and situation specific.

Absolutely! I would hope that the favour would be returned. I'm also very big on letting people know if their 'fly' is undone or skirt tucked up. Personally, I would hate walking around with half a lettuce stuck to my teeth.  Prior thanks to those people who are willing to help me keep myself presentable in public.

Of course you tell them, because if you don't, they will think that you are thoughtless when they find out that you must have seen it and not told them.  Just tell them....."Um, I think you have something on your teeth, right there".  Done. Was that so hard?

If you don't carass themselve about the person say nothing.  I have walked around with a friendenemy when they had food in their teeth and watched people react to them.  It was very funny.

But if you are close to someone and it will be well recived, ey tell them so they don't embarras themselves.
