Having eaten alone most of the time since the death of my wife, I have to say it's way overrated. Its benefits are swamped by its detriments.

I think you eat less, are more focused and perhaps eat in a hurry...unless you have a great book with you. I know I will eat more with great company.

To quote from the legend that is Mr.T.  "I got no time for jibber jabber!"
Seriously though its best when in a hurry.  No worries about manners or what the other would do/want.  When you want to ENJOY the meal you shouldn't be alone though.  :-)

I think there are equally positive and negative benefits and it depends on your character. Personally, I think eating alone allows me to eat more with no shame. When I eat with someone, I am worried about what they think if I stuff my face. It totally depends on who you are!

It is definitely more peaceful sometimes to eat alone. You can just have your meal and not have to keep up a conversation, and rejuvenate a little.  Especially at work, I want to get away from everyone. Otherwise it's a social thing and I love the company.

Eating alone keeps you focused on what you're eating and where you're eating. It gives you the opportunity to assess the food and the place thoroughly. You ask if the food is really great or if it's presented nicely; how you were treated and if the service was good; and who usually eats there and if people enjoy eating there.

Eating alone gives you opportunity to meditate on some very important issues waiting for your attention. Eating is a physical activity. You are free to use your mind meantime. It saves your time when you are eating alone. Secondly when you are eating alone you can truly enjoy the delicious meal. Otherwise in the gathering your attention is upon chatting and less is on the meal. Medical research proves that the food may not be digested properly if you eat it in stress or in hurry. The probability of these two issues is close to zero when you are eating alone.

Intra-communication - the ability or opportunity to talk to oneself.  It is as important as inter-communication.  There are times when we need to reflect and have quiet times with ourselves in that way one is able to re-evaluate his/her priorities and move forward most often with the best tools at hand.

Well it would have the same benefits of doing anything alone.
The person has time to really think about their dreams, etc.
They have peace and quiet to work out the problems they have using their voice and no one else's.
They can enjoy the benefit of their own company.

Eating alone is good sometimes because it allows you to savor the flavor of the food without being distracted by a lot of chatter.

It also allows you to pay attention to how fast you consume your food, I think we probably all need to slow down and really process our meals...but then again, I am a huge foodie.

    Great Question.

If something embarassing occurs, you will be the only one to know. For instance, if you're eating some sort of sandwich, and a long shred of dressing-lathered lettuce slaps onto your chin, you are free to wipe it off in peace, while the color of your cheeks remains neutral because you are eating only with yourself smile This is my estimable opinion, gleaned from personal experience.

There is another way to eat alone that I don't see mentioned in the answers to date.

I enjoy cooking for myself, laying out a beautiful plate, and eating slowly, one bite at a time. I simply enjoy the taste of the food, and the feeling of chewing it, and even washing the dishes when I'm done.

Some people call it mindful eating. It is a traditional Zen practice.

Since I live alone and eat alone, you can cook what you want and don't have to worry about leftovers. No picky eaters allowed!
