There's not a best way, there is only your way. Me, I grind the beans in on eof those whirly blade thingies for five or six seconds, put 'em in the press pot, pour some water just off the boil onto them, stir with the handle of a wooden spoon to make sure all the grounds get wet, fill the pot the rest of the way with more hot water, let it steep for six minutes or so (I like it strong), press it, and pour it into a thermal carafe.
Some say you shouldn't let it steep more than four minutes, others that you have to use a burr grinder, still more that your water had to be exactly 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Nonsense, say I. Experiment a bit, and make it as you like it.
