It depends on whether it's a tailgate or a hike-in. For a tailgate where I can have a cooler I pack devilled eggs, sliced cold ham or roast beef, marinated olives or tapenade, freshly baked bread, hard cheese, hummus, bean or carrot salad, fresh fruit, and brownies along w/ a good bottle of wine or champagne. If I am eating on the trail, I pack hard cheese, apples and tangerines, dry salami, trail mix, cookies, dark chocolate, and a baguette. I still include wine, pale ale, or San Peligrino. Never pack in more than you are willing to cart out because trash cans are not always found.
