What is the best way to test if an egg is really fresh before cracking it?

How do you know that the egg you want to use is a fresh one? I often mix my free range eggs together in a large bowl and can't tell which ones were laid first or which ones were laid last.

Correct! It's because when eggs are not really fresh, air gets in them and they float.
