Simply put, a Sponge Cake is a non-yeast cake where a Pound Cake gets it's name from the fact that it is made wit one pound of the four main ingredients which are; flour, sugar, butter and eggs.
I love a good fresh Pound Cake.

I suppose it is a regional/cultural difference. Where I am at, 'sponge cake' is synonymous with 'angelfood cake'. Here, pound cake is far more solid and less fluffly.
