What is the difference between fruit preserves and jam?


Are they really just two words for the same thing?

    Ah--I wasn't sure if it was maybe bigger pieces in the preserves--hence 'higher' fruit content... Thanks for your input; it's always interesting to see the differences from 'across the pond.'
