Have you or someone you know ever "dined and dashed?"
Dine and dash refers to eating and skipping out on the bill. Some teens have done this as a prank but have you seen or have you ever done this?
I have seen that done. Several years ago we went to Longview, Texas to visit a friend in hospice. Afterward, we went with his wife and all their family to a local pizza parlor. Next to us was a large table with about 20 people. They all got up and left as soon as they finished eating, and a moment later, their server came to the table all upset -- they had actually walked out without paying a dime. It was just hard to believe!
How sad for the server. Those people should have been watched by management. Looks like the restaurant didn't have enough workers.
Stacie L, I forgot to tell the rest of the story. When the other diners saw and heard what happened, they all chipped in and paid the tab.
That is totally disgusting, what egregious behavior on the part of the 20 people. This is indeed stealing.
That is a horrible thing to do! I would never consider such an action. ... well, not unless both the food and service were horrible, but then, I'd ask to speak to a manager and demand the meal be "comped."
So I was back home from college for the summer working at a diner to earn some much needed money when an old friend of mine walks in. I haven't seen the guy for some time as he and I had distanced ourselves over time. He decided to become a laborer of sorts prior to graduation and I decided to earn a degree. Different strokes for different folks I guess...So he and I talked briefly. I still remember that he had a bacon cheeseburger deluxe well-done and a large coke. I tended to other customers later on and after dropping off his check at his table. A moment later my manager comes up to me and says the following to me:
"Your 'friend' left without paying."
Immediately I told her that we used to be friends but no more. She didn't seem to be concerned about that tidbit but then proceeded to tell me to go after him for the check. I cannot describe to you how pissed I was, but what choice did I have? If his check wasn't accounted for our drawer would be short and that would not be good. I knew where he worked and so went immediately there on foot. He was practically across the street and a block over. When I asked him for the money, he pretended to play the "Oh crap! Did I forget to pay?" card on me. He then reaches into his pocket and pulls out a fiver. After I gave him a a crooked glance he pleads that it's all he had.
I had to compensate the rest of his bill, which was an additional $2.25 or so.
This was the only occasion in which I experienced a dine in dash. Such people should be thrown in jail for this nonsense behavior!

How much do you tip a bad waiter or waitress? This has been a hot bed of controversy each time someone fails to tip, tips very little, or leaves a rude comment. If I receive bad service, I leave a small tip. If it's so bad that I have to complain, I don't leave a tip at all. One example...
