You can start anything except for honey and whole nuts.
Look into baby led weaning if you haven't already, we did it with my daughter and it was great. No purées involved, we just gave her whatever we were eating in manageable sizes.
Health Canada recommends giving meat as soon as babies are ready for solids to ensure they get iron. Baby cereals and the like offer very little nutrition.
Some of the first foods my daughter liked were banana slices, small bits of chicken, small pieces of broccoli and carrots, cucumber sticks, cheese and crackers, mashed potatoes, grapes (cut in half length-wise so they're not a choking hazard), spaghetti, pasta, etc. Basically just anything but in appropriately sized pieces for a baby!
