What are the benefits of eating salads on a daily basis?

I posted a salad challenge on Facebook several weeks ago and extended it into the New Year as a commitment to healthier eating. What are the benefits of eating vegetable salads daily? I alternate dressings and toppings like chicken, tuna, shrimp, egg, seeds, and nuts.

The benefits are countless–fresh is best because food's nutrition has not been "cooked out", fresh is best because taste has not deteriorated by freezing or by heating, and fresh is best because it's fast and easy.  smile  For me, the simpler making a meal is the happier I am so a salad's quick preparation is right up there with its health benefits.

We are benefitting from not eating carbs and fats at the same time so we watch out for the dressings' content.  Fats are an important part of our diet, though, so if we eat a salad with a higher fat meat, with nuts, or cheese, we avoid adding fruits (except blueberries because they are considered a free food).

A fresh green salad with a variety of fruits is a yummy salad change up that is loaded with crucial nutrients and fibers.  Citrus, berries, figs and plums, melons, and of course apples all make amazing mid-day salads with a raspberry vinaigrette dressing.

    Hooray for salads!

Thank you so much for your answer, RTalloni. These details are just what I needed to inspire me and keep me focused on my mission of healthier eating. I appreciate it.

In theory, it improves your health by increasing your intake of vegetables (which the average American doesn't get enough of) and lower calorie intake (eating salad vs a burger).
In reality, many salads have so much high calorie dressing and meat in them that it isn't much different than the burger.

Hi Tamara. Many thanks for you answer and reminder that we don't eat enough vegetables so we need more. I'm not a burger person but once in a while it tastes pretty good. I like turkey and veggie burgers. I try to use vinaigrettes for salads.

I believe it will greatly improve your metabolism and it is always a good idea to include vegetable in your daily meal. However, best to keep in mind to not over eat or just purely eat salad to prevent nutrition deprive. I would prefer making my meal more colourful (i.e. including protein + different types of vegetables) smile Hope it helps!

Definitely helps, Jason. Thank you for your answer. I do eat other meals and vegetables as well but trying to do more salads at lunch time.
