A Berry, Berry Good Smoothie for the Fall Season

Although Fall is here and the weather is beginning to get cooler there is no reason you can't still enjoy a cool, refreshing drink such as a good ol'e fashion fruit and vegetable smoothie.

A smoothie is is simply a blended drink that typically contain fruit of some kind. They are normally made with ice and have the consistency of a milkshake. Although they usually have fruit in them, a smoothie may also contain peanut butter, chocolate, milk, yogurt, honey and vegetables.

Additionally you will also find smoothies that contain herbal supplements, green tea, whey powder, soy milk and even nutritional supplements.

Although smoothies in the United States can be traced back to the 1930's they did not really gain popularity until the 1960's when many in the United States started looking towards macrobiotic vegetarianism as a part of their lifestyles.

Today you will find many restaurants and cafe's selling smoothies as well as bottled smoothies in your local grocery store. Additionally there are cookbooks dedicated to smoothies as well as special blenders made specifically to make your favorite smoothies right at home.

Berry, Berry Good Smoothie Ingredients

Although you can find many different smoothie recipes this is one of my favorites and is quick and easy to make. Below are the ingredients that will be needed.

  • 1/2 raspberries
  • 1/2 cup strawberries
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1 cup 2% milk
  • 1 cup apple juice (unsweetened)
  • 2 cups ice
  • 1 small carrot
  • Once all the ingredients are added simply blend until it has the desired consistency.

Smoothies are Healthy

A smoothie is a great healthy alternative that you can have on the go. They are perfect for breakfest, an afternoon snack or even as a healthy desert. Smoothies are a great way to get much needed protein, minerals and vitamins.

Smoothies Vs Juicing

Juicing is another great way to get your daily dose of fruits and veggies but takes longer to make and can not be made with a blender. To be able to juice you need a juicer which is much more expensive than a blender would cost you.

With juicing you get more of the nutrients and vitamins from the produce but you don't get any of the fiber. This makes it easier for your body to absorb the nutrients. However, it is important to include fiber in our diet so alternating between juicing and smoothies is a great way to get everything you need out of your fresh fruits and vegetables.
