Best Cooking Magazines

Updated on September 29, 2014

Top Cooking Magazine Subscriptions

I love cooking as it is a very relaxing as well as rewarding hobby. I enjoy listening to music and having a glass of wine or beer when I cook - it's like a ritual for me. Normally I'm not very adventurous at all, but I make an exception when it comes to food: I often try new recipes to surprise and entertain my friends and family. My favorite cuisine is Italian, but I am also a big fan of Indian and Middle Eastern foods. And I have a thing for desserts (who doesn't?) Cakes, pies, ice creams, chocolates...

When I go to libraries I always collect old issues of food magazines as well as regional cook books like Hawaiian, Oriental, Mexican, Greek, Jewish - you name it. These help me experiment and expand my culinary horizons. After years of collecting and subscribing, I wanted to share some of my favorites here on this page. Feel free to leave me a comment about your favorite magazines, too.

#1. Bon Apetit

Monthly food magazine running since year 1956

Bon Appetit is an excellent food magazine which will be appreciated by both experienced cooks as well as those just starting out in the kitchen. Its contents include creative recipes for delicious and fresh dishes, articles that will help you improve your skills, and tips for those who are just starting their journey to becoming a chef. Bon Appetit also writes about popular travel destinations and restaurants that food lovers simply have to visit. In addition to that, there's information on beer, wine, and distilled beverages. All-in-all, Bon Appetit is a well-rounded food magazine that deservedly appeals to a large variety of readers.

#2. Cooking Light

Healthy cooking magazine that provides 100+ new recipes every month

Cooking Light is a great source of healthy and delicious recipes. Whether you want to cook a quick and easy dinner, or surprise your friends with mouthwatering snacks at a party, this magazine will come to the rescue. CL busts the myth that healthy food is hard or complicated to make: anyone can create these tasty, fresh, and low-calorie dishes. Tens of new appetizing and nutritious recipes are included in every issue. Cooking aside, there's also tips for healthy eating, workout ideas, and travel destinations. A lot of the aforementioned content can also be found on their website.

#3. Eating Well

One of the best healthy cooking periodicals with quick and easy recipes

If you want to start eating healthier but don't have much time too cook, then EatingWell is for you. This award-winning magazine is chock-full of delicious recipes (complete with gorgeous photos), healthier preparation methods, and nutrition info from the experts. Most of their recipes actually take 45 minutes or less, so this magazine is a great help if you're in a hurry. Make sure to use organic and fresh ingredients, and the meals you prepare won't only be delicious, but also full of vitamins and minerals. EatingWell also writes on subjects like metabolism-boosting foods, how to prevent weight gain during the holidays, ingredients and foods to avoid, and more. In addition to the hard copy, you can get this magazine on Kindle Fire, Nook, and other devices.

#4. Saveur

Gourmet food magazine which writes about cuisines from all over the world

This periodical provides its readers with flavorful recipes, culinary techniques, kitchen tips and tricks, and all sorts of amazing information about food. That includes real home cooking from various cuisines of the world, best restaurants and other places for those looking for an authentic and genuine local experience, and stories about different cultures and people. Saveur is a great choice for a foodie interested in more exotic fare. A 1-year subscription to this magazine will get you 9 issues.

#5. Vegetarian Times

Popular vegetarian cooking magazine for those interested in living green

New vegetarians and vegans sometimes have trouble creating dishes that are both healthy, nutritious, and tasty, and that's where Vegetarian Times comes to the rescue. It is a trusted source for people who want to live healthy, but enjoy delicious food as well. More than just a cooking magazine, this periodical provides not only delectable recipes, but also information from doctors and nutritionists to help you live a healthy vegetarian lifestyle. It also includes book and eco-friendly product reviews and covers important issues like animal cruelty as well as other matters associated with the vegan way of living.

Lifestyle or Recipes?

Most magazines contain both, in different proportions

Some readers only want to learn new, interesting recipes and skip over the rest of the content. Others look forward to articles on the world's cuisines, famous chefs, and healthy living. Most magazines listed here contain a bit of both. If you're really only looking for recipes and cooking tips, then I believe Cook's Illustrated is your best bet. It contains no advertising and is very accessible even if you're a beginner cook. It is a great choice if you aren't interested in lifestyle and celebrity articles and just want the down-to-earth stuff, so to speak.

Personally I also enjoy finding out about the latest trends in beer and wine, the newest innovations in food preparation, and different cuisines of the world. If you're like me then you will probably enjoy the content of the other magazines listed on the page above. It's always interesting to learn new things and find out what people eat around the world.

Easy Cooking Instructions

Learn useful food preparation techniques from the pros

YouTube is a surprisingly good place to learn more about cooking. Watching people actually make the food can be a lot more helpful than reading dry instructions from a cookbook. The following video, for example, will help you learn how to cook a great steak.

Hello, I found a cooking magazine in London airport last week, but I didn't buy it and would like to find its reference, it is about recipe of season during all the year, with Jamie Oliver... Do you have an idea? It looked very interesting... The price is about 10 pounds.
