The Best-Ever Sloppy Joes Recipe

The Best Sloppy Joes Recipe Is Quick, Easy, Economical, Nutritious and Delicious

Sloppy Joes. YUM. That is what I think when I think of our family's Best-Ever Sloppy Joes Recipe. It is fast and easy and devoured by every member of our family with absolutely no reservations and plenty of enthusiasm!

The name Sloppy Joes may sound awful to you but the recipe is for a wonderfully delicious comfort food that is perfect for a quick and easy dinner which also happens to be easy on the pocketbook. This version is actually a bit more nutritious than many sloppy joes because it has the addition of bell peppers and corn.

Just how fast is this recipe, Brenda? Well assuming you have basic cooking skills, you should be able to get this meal onto the supper table in about 25 minutes. And how many will it serve? The recipe makes four servings. That is enough for the four hungry members of our family although it does not make enough for leftovers for us or for seconds or thirds. (I have two teenage boys, it is possible that they would have seconds and thirds.) After writing up the leftover recommendations further down on this page, I have decided that the next time I make this recipe I will be doubling it. Once you are familiar with this recipe, you just might decide to do the same!

Sloppy Joe Recipe

1 onion chopped

1 clove garlic minced

2 bell peppers chopped (red is best but green is fine)

1 tbsp. vegetable or olive oil

1 pound of lean ground beef (some call it ground beef round)

2 tsps. chili powder possibly more

2 cups of spaghetti sauce preferably homemade but a jar will do

1 1/4 cup of frozen corn kernels

4 rolls

Salt and pepper to taste

Cook time: 30 min
Ready in: 30 min
Yields: 4

  1. Add the ground beef, onion, garlic and peppers to a somewhat deep skillet or frying pan, stirring occasionally until the ground beef is cooked.
  2. Add the chili powder, corn and the spaghetti sauce.
  3. Cover and simmer on a low heat setting for 5 minutes.
  4. During the simmering time, toast your buns.
  5. Season the cooked mix with salt and pepper to taste. (I usually do not add salt.)
  6. To serve, spoon the meat mixture over the buns!
Cast your vote for The Best-Ever Sloppy Joes Recipe

Sloppy joes are also called wimpies, yip yips, slushburgers, barbecues, hot tamalaes, steamers and gulash!

What Exactly Is A Sloppy Joe?

Wikipedia has a pretty basic definition of a sloppy joe. They say that "a sloppy joe is an American dish of ground beef, onions, sweetened tomato sauce or ketchup and other seasonings, served on a hamburger bun." I would say that that is a pretty good definition; a little different but very similar to my recipe.

Rachael Ray is an author and television host and is the founder of a charitable foundation that helps parents and children learn healthy relationships with food. This is her biggest collection ever and is more than 300 pages of new, 30-minute meals!

Amazon Customer Review:

"The Orange book is YUM! I love the asparagus pasta recipe, florentine lasagne, and other Italian dishes. I work really long hours, so her 30-minute recipes are my fave from a practical standpoint. This collection has so many recipes. It will keep me going for years." ~~ Paula "book lover"

What To Serve With A Sloppy Joe

You can make your sloppy joes into a meal by serving it on grains or pasta, on buns, on a baked potato, beside a baked potato with a vegetable or with homefries. Add a salad or vegetables and dip and you are set for a great suppertime meal!

A Sloppy Joe Apron

Use an apron to protect your clothes!

I have to admit that I don't always wear an apron but I do when I'm frying beef and especially beef with tomato sauce! This apron is a fun kitchen-themed machine-washable, 100-percent cotton apron. One size fits all, it features an adjustable neck and a front pocket. Lovely and fun!

A sloppy joe is called 'sloppy' because it can be very messy to eat. When you eat it...well, if you eat it as a sandwich...the contents tend to spring out from all sides! Some people, myself included, prefer to eat this dish open faced and with a fork and knife!

Every recipe should come with recommendations for leftovers! For this recipe, you can use the leftover sloppy joes mix on potatoes, in tortillas or in tacos. It would be well worth doubling the recipe in order to have leftovers!

The meat mixture will keep in the freezer for about three months. You could either freeze a whole batch or freeze it in individual portions and defrost as required.

A budget-friendly meal, sloppy joes date to the depression in the 1930s. However, their popularity definitely grew greatly in the 1950's and 60's.

A Final Word About The Best-Ever Sloppy Joes Recipe

In my opinion, the best Sloppy Joes meal is served just like the one in the very first picture on this page. The meat mixture is served open faced on two delicious, toasted buns with a wonderful mixed salad. (Because there are teenage boys in my home, the salad often becomes a Caesar salad, which is very good, too.)

It may surprise you to know, Brenda, that up until about a fortnight ago, I had never heard of Sloppy Joes. I heard them mentioned on a TV programme, deemed to find out what they are and promptly forgot about them again until a couple of days ago. I am actually typing this as my own take on Sloppy Joe mix is cooking and I wish I had found this lens an hour earlier. Fabulous production and I will most definitely take your suggestions in to account whenever I next have a go at Sloppy Joes.
