This book really does a thorough job explaining home canning and preserving. Plus, it has 400 recipes. If you buy just one book on canning, this is the one I recommend. Blogs can do a good job at adding recipes to your collection until you decide you want to check out more cookbooks.

Blogs and Websites for Beginners

One thing that many people worry about when they begin to can and preserve food is safety. Making sure that you properly prepare the food is crucial to help avoid food-borne illnesses. Canning is one area where it isn't a good idea to experiment with recipes - the amount of acid and length of time that the food is processed is key in preventing bacterial growth. Visit these links to learn more about the techniques involved in home canning and preserving.

It is important to take the time to learn how to can and preserve properly if you are interested. And always keep in mind one basic rule: When in doubt, throw it out. Food-borne illnesses are nothing to mess around with!

Canning Supplies

New to canning? Take a look at some of these options for jars, pots, and supplies. Luckily, it doesn't take much to begin canning beyond jars and a big pot, and you an add extra accessories as you need them.

Food in Jars

A Blog for Canning and Preserving Recipes

One of my favorite blogs for creative canning recipes and ideas is Food in Jars. I love this blog because of its dedication to small batch canning and preserving recipes. Not everyone who enjoys home canning has the need for dozens of jars of jam. Sometimes, just a few half-pint jars is all you need!

Search the Recipe Index to get plenty of wonderful ideas of what you can do with that extra produce.

Food in Jars Cookbooks

As you've just read, one of my favorite canning blogs is Food in Jars (plus, every time my brain sees the URL I read it as "Food Ninjas," which makes it that much cooler). Marisa now has a cookbook out so you can bring her canning ideas straight into your kitchen.

I love this book because it focuses on preserving in small batches. Her "Urban Preservation" series on the blog is my favorite because we don't have much space to store our bounty, plus there are only two of us to eat it. Small batches are the perfect solution and now I have an entire recipe book of them!

There are tons of other great blogs and websites that focus on canning and preservation. These are great resources to find new recipes or learn more about canning. They each have a unique spin, so check them all out and see what's perfect for you!

Canning Books on eBay

Sometimes I like to expand my library through eBay. Keep an eye out and you may be able to find a great deal or a cookbook that's just perfect. There are plenty of home canning and preserving books available.

This is one of the few things I haven't tried. I think now though I would be more likely to buy the fresh produce and preserve it instead of growing it myself. That's a thought......
