Best Square Cake Pans

Updated on February 12, 2013

Why Buy Square Cake Pans?

There are many reasons to own a square cake pan. Square cakes have several advantages over round cakes and are more attractive and classy looking than a standard rectangular cake. As one who has served many a cake at various events, I know how much easier it is to cut and serve a square cake than a traditional round layer cake. Square cakes also have more servings than a comparably sized round cake.

You can learn more about your square cake pan options in the sections below to determine which kind of square cake pan will work best for you.

Fat Daddio's Anodized Aluminum Square Cake Pans

If you are looking for square cake pans that are professional-grade quality and have sharp, crisp corners with no seams, then you will want to take a look at Fat Daddio's square cake pans. The Fat Daddio brand of bakeware is highly regarded by both home and professional bakers. They offer a huge assortment of square cake pan sizes that start at 4 inches and increase by an inch all the way up to 20 inches. Each size is also available in 2 inch, 3 inch or 4 inch depths so that you can vary the thickness of your square cake layers.

Made from 14 gauge non-reactive anodized aluminum, they are dishwasher safe and come backed with a lifetime warranty. The uniform thickness of the pan walls allows for even baking. One of my favorite features of the Fat Daddio square pans (besides how easy they are to clean up) is the wide rim around the top of the pan which makes it very easy to grasp and move around between your work area and the oven. I don't know how many times I have nicked the edge of one my cakes with the potholder when trying to take it out of the oven before I bought one of the Fat Daddio pans. That rim makes all the difference in the world. If you want to make baking easier, then these square cake pans from Fat Daddio fit the bill perfectly!

Different Square Cake Pan Options

The square cake pans shown below illustrate some of the different types of square cake pans that are available. Some are made from stainless steel rather than aluminum. Others come with a lid, making them perfect for transporting your baked or cooked items. If you are looking for a pan that is easy to clean, you can purchase a square cake pan with a non-stick lining. I personally own two Rachael Ray non-stick pans (the one with orange handles) in both the square and rectangular sizes and they are great for cooking meals as well as baking cakes (just be sure to use a plastic utensil for cutting and serving your dish to avoid scratching the non-stick surface).

Wilton Square Cake Pan Set

If you regularly use different sizes of square baking pans, purchasing a set can save you money over purchasing pans one at a time. Also, over time, pans can change shape slightly. By purchasing a set, you ensure that your square pans will all be the same style.

This set includes three pans: 8-inch, 12-inch, and 16-inch. Each pan is 2 inches deep. They are manufactured from high quality anodized aluminum which promotes even heating for exceptional baking performance.

Wilton Aluminum Performance Pans Square Pans

If you need a specific size of square pan, these classic aluminum pans by Wilton are available in five sizes: 6-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch, 12-inch, and 14-inch.

These durable, even-heating square baking pans are rust-resistant and will last you for years, keeping their square shape. Square baking pans can be used for many more things beyond baking cakes - they also work wonderfully for cooking meats, casseroles and other types of dishes.

Wilton Recipe Right Square 9 by 9 Inch Covered Pan

This 9-inch square baking pan includes a handy snap-on cover that makes it easy to take a dish to a party or store leftovers. In this picture, you can't see the inside of this pan, but it is constructed of heavy-gauge steel with a non-stick coating that allows food to come out easily and makes for easy clean up as well! Some bakers prefer the heat conducting properties of steel over aluminum, saying that steel browns baked items better and more evenly than aluminum does.

Square Angel Food Cake Pan

A square angel food cake pan is a fun and unique addition to your bakeware collection. If you are unfamiliar with angel food cake, it is different from standard cakes because it is classified as a sponge cake and has a lighter, more airy texture than butter cakes. The batter is made with whipped egg whites and uses cake flour made from softer wheat. It also has a much lower fat content, making it popular with those watching their fat intake.

Angel food cake is one of my favorites, but it can be hard to find in the grocery store and it tends to be fairly expensive (not to mention stale sometimes). Fortunately, it is not hard to make, once you understand how to handle the batter and bake it.

Angel food cake needs to be baked in a tube pan that has high, straight sides and a hollow central core. The core allows the heat to reach the entire cake so that the edges do not cook faster than the center. Also, the straight sides and central core help the cake to rise because the batter clings to the sides as it rises. Pound cakes are also best baked in tube pans because the heavy batter of a pound cake can bake unevenly in regular cake pans.

Most tube cake pans are round, but you can buy square angel food cake pans that have some advantages over the round ring pans. For example, I frequently use angel food cake to make trifle desserts and it is much easier to cut angel food cake into cubes when it has been baked in a square angel food cake pan. I also think that serving a cake that has been baked in a square tube pan is easier to cut into equal portions and serve. The square shape is also attractive and can add variety to the look of your baked desserts. Take a look at the square angel food cake pans below. They are made in slightly different sizes so take that into consideration when you make your purchase.
