The Best Thermos To Keep Coffee Hot

Updated on January 6, 2013

I hate cold coffee. That's just me and I know some people like their coffee warm or even cold but I hate it when my coffee starts cooling down.

When I'm at home I use small coffee cups so that I don't have to guzzle it while it's hot and when I head out of the house I always use a good thermos or travel mug.

I've written on my experiences with the Stainless King travel mug before and it's my go to travel mug of choice and I've written on insulated coffee cups too but for use as a Thermos I still advise sticking to the Stainless King line.

The thermos bottle pictured to the left is rated to to keep coffee and other liquids hot for 12 hours but in my experience I've sealed coffee in these for 24 hours only to open them later and still get warm coffee.

You can see this insulated Thermos here for more info or see some of the other similar options and alternatives featured below.

The Best Insulated Thermos For Heat Retention

This Thermos is designed to keep coffee hot for 12 hours but I've left hot coffee in it for a full 24 and only experienced partial heat loss.

Other Styles From The Stainless King Line

The Stainless King line from Thermos is the best line hands-down for keeping hot liquids like coffee or tea hot for a really long time. Honestly there are a few other excellent alternatives out there which I've featured lower on this page but the airless vacuum insulation used in the construction of these mugs and bottles virtually eliminates heat loss when the drinking lid or cap is sealed.

The Best Alternatives To Thermos For Keeping Coffee Hot

As noted above I believe the vacuum insulated construction that is used in in the Stainless King series to be the best but there are other viable alternative. The following thermoses are all capable of keeping coffee or tea hot for between 4-6 hours which is about as long as most people need insulation anyway. In some cases the price may be a bit lower on these and others may be a it higher for other reasons such as style or functional features involved in the construction of the lids. See each product description for more details on product differentiation.

Contigo Stainless Steel Double Wall Vacuum Insulated Tumbler
Contigo Stainless Steel Double Wall Vacuum Insulated Tumbler

This is one of the most popular selling vacuum insulated mugs on the market. It is rated to keep coffee hot for 4 hours compared to 5-12 for the Thermoses featured above. What Makes this mug great is the auto-seal drinking spout which makes it virtually impossible to spill.

The OXO mug featured to the left is probably the best "cheap" alternative to the Stainless King. It is roughly half the retail price of the Thermos brand mug and it keeps drinks hot for reportedly 7 hours. It is supposed to be leak proof but I would trust Contigo for that above all others. In regards to heat retention this mug is great for it's price but I can't imagine it satisfying you like the Stanley or the Stainless King would.

Looking For A Well Insulated Coffee Carafe Instead?

Thermos makes a lot of quality mugs and bottles but they also make carafe's too. The coffee carafes keep coffee hotter far longer than most alternatives and they are leaps and bounds better for your coffee then keeping it sitting on a burner for hours on end. Below are a few of the top rates Thermos coffee carafes by rating - all are quite capable of keeping freshly brewed coffee hot for 8-10 hours at a time.
