Duel: Can Sikhs eat Meat?

Updated on November 12, 2015

Meat or no Meat? Yummy or disgusting?

My question is: To eat meat or not to eat meat? Can a Sikh eat meat or not?

The opinion is divided... There are vegan Sikhs, vegetarian Sikhs and meat eating Sikhs? What does the Guru Granth Sahib (holy Sikh book) say? Or is it the rule created by people? I know that some of the Gurus were eating meat and there were times when meat was served in Langar halls?

Poll: Are you a meat eater? - Are you a meat eater? Vegetarian? Vegan?

sikhs eat meat, meat, sikhs, squidoo, veg, vegan, vegetarian, veg vs meat
sikhs eat meat, meat, sikhs, squidoo, veg, vegan, vegetarian, veg vs meat

Are you a meat eater?

See results

Can you eat meat if you are a Sikh? Why is it forbidden? Why some people are still under the impression that they can eat meat? Are there any mentions of this topic in the Guru Granth Sahib?

Guru gobind singh loved eating meat as I have read but i believe you eat what you need and with respect and no more than what you need....plants are conscious of themselves so they feel when you kill them...everything is consciousness animals are just more evolved forms of consciousness...all the more reason if you DO need to eat animals...make sure you do it with respect and not through an addiction to it...sat Sri akal!!

I think it is up to the individual. There seems to be a lot of different opinions. I quit eating meat recently and was tough at first but it's fine now and I feel better and also started losing weight! My husband and I are trying not to eat meat because it doesn't feel right when we eat meat.

I am really very confused, I am 11 years old and I am the only Amritdhari in my family. I live in Australia and my parents said me that I can eat eggs but I have always rejected. When I was reading some comments regarding this topic it said you can eat jhatka meat but not Halal. I don't know if a amritdhare can eat eggs.

I live in Australia and nearly everything has eggs in it. I just need a clear answer if a amritdhari can eat eggs or not. Some of our amritdhare friends eat eggs and some don't. In the Gurudwara wear I became amritdhari they did not tell us about eating meat or eggs.

So do I eat eggs or no?

ive been a vege for 5yrs now , but im going into sikhi more and i cant find anywhere that says u cant eat meat???

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I would say its up to you if you really want to eat meat, but make sure it is jhatka as we do not believe in sacrificing an animal in the name of god. Also, sikhi is not against eating meat as it is a way of how one should live your life. But come sense prevails, if you eat meat it is likely that you will start to drink as well.

      hehe

Yes, I do and I am Sikh ... so what of it???

Water is what gives life; when scientists explore whether other life exists on other planets the first thing they look for is a source of water. Animals, grains, vegetables and fruit all contain water so in essence we are taking the life from all organisms whether we eat meat or are vegetarians. When you pull an onion from the soil and rip its roots and break off the leaves - you are torturing a life. Just because vegetables are a more basic form of life doesn't mean it doesn't feel. So there is nothing wrong with eating meat because to be truly and completely free from harming anything: you will starve to death.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

Very simple answer: Yes. (source: Rahit Mayarda)

    • anonymous 4 years ago

eating meat there is nothing wrong with that because a tabla is made from the skin/hide of an animal. A table is an instrument used in prayer and is in the same vicinity as the Guru Granth Sahib. The only reason why sikhs do not eat meat is because meat makes one weak. Like someone pointed out, meat is just for swaad, and the reason why u dont eat it is because it makes one's mind stronger by controlling the temptation and staying true with ur principles. Guru Nanak came into this world and never disagreed with the fact of eating meat. Guru Nanak, all he preached about, was being true to ur self and being a good human, insahan. The tenth Guru came and established Sikhi and it's principles, so Sikhi could have a foundation to grow on. In the principles Guru Gobind SIngh said one should not eat meat. Therefore, it should be once choice whether that person wants to eat meat or not, but that person should always remember to be good person.

Plants and animals are both living things. Vegetarians are STILL killing and consuming living things (plants).

Meat eating is prohibited in Sikhi. There is no meat served in langars. There are kathas which tell us to avoid meat.None of the Gurus ever consumed meat. These are only incorrect stories spread by leftist liberals and muslims.

A katha in gurmat goes like this.

a lion is about to kill and eat a goat. The Goat laughs. The lion says " i am about to tear your stomach and eat you up, its your worst moment in life and you are laughing?"

the goat says " i am a goat , an animal devoid of ANY ego and i eat grass that to with fear ...if this is what happens to me then i am fearing what will happen to you who killed and eats animals"

Yea all the retard Jats of Punjab will do anything to to make the argument of eating meat on their side. Tomorrow they will say alcohol is not prohibited and a day after drugs are not prohibited. Bastards have gripped sikhi and look at the state of Sikhs in Punjab. Learnt this from their European masters.. Have you ever seen a real sikh associate themselves with caste . Only Jats do. And will wag their tails wil their eupro[ean masters through them a chicken bone.

DEAR FREINDS SIKHISM STARTS FROM DAYA AND EATING A LIVING BEING FOR TASTE IS NOT DAYA PEOPLE MOLDED GURBANI VERSES ON THEIR OWN TO MAKE THEIR NASTY TASTE BUDS.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Those who are saying yes are just making an excuse to justify that they are right in eating meat. Nothing else.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

the animals you want to eat have hearts, brains, NERVES... and the majority of them are killed in torturous ways that are little explored in the widespread media. If you can live without harming these helpless creature, and instead live in harmony with them, as an intellectual and ever developing species- us humans should be able to make a concious decision to make us of the many foods which are derived from the earth, which provide so many more nutritional benifits and if you some brief research, you will find that actually an extensive and exlusively vegetarian diet is much healthier than a diet which includes meat.

At the end of the day, it is purely ones choice, but trying it out, doing some research weighing out the benefits of a vegetarian and meat diet will not do any harm and any way, our sikh gurus teach us to live in harmony with everything on the planet- while maintaining our health, we can do this with a vegetarian diet then i suppose we are fulfilling our duty... trust me do your research on google, youtube, books, and most of have an open mind and be willing to live the way our religion guides us to... it is more likely to enlighten and strengthen you rather than debilitate you!! :)

      • anonymous 4 years ago

        can

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Absolutely not. I think that it is clear that killing is wrong, and that we should be vegetarian

      • anonymous 4 years ago

I am just surprised how many SIKHS believe that we can eat meat. A simple answer is if it was allowed we would be serving it in Langar Halls. My request to all the SIKHS who are eating meat. Its fine if you want to eat it. But please do not justify it by saying our Gurus did it. No one can tell you want you can or can not eat but please don't force your opinion on other that it is allowed.

        Thank you!

Noo way we cant eat meat

      • anonymous 5 years ago

meat is nothing but an attachment...(in punjabi--swaad)..if one must be a good sikh and be one with waheguru...they must let go of all the attachments including sweets, meats, or any other tastes. think of the history in sikhism...has any sant (sant baba jarnail singh ji, sant baba gurbachan singh ji, sant baba ishar singh ji, sant baba mustuana wale) or any other sant ever promoted or ate meat in their lives. the reason they did not support the idea of eating meat was because it is not right

      • anonymous 5 years ago

a few quotes from Guru Granth Sahib Ji.these clearly show meat is wrong. there are lots more quotes.

You kill living beings, and call it a righteous action.

Tell me, brother, what would you call an unrighteous action?

You call yourself the most excellent sage; then who would you call a butcher? (2) (ang 1103).

You say that the One Lord is in all, so why do you kill chickens? (1) (ang 1350)

Kabeer, to use force is tyranny, even if you call it legal.

When your account is called for in the Court of the Lord, what will your condition be then? (187) Kabeer, the dinner of beans and rice is excellent, if it is flavored with salt. Who would cut his throat, to have meat with his bread? (188)

Kabeer, those mortals who consume marijuana, fish and wine

        - no matter what pilgrimages, fasts and rituals they follow, they will all go to hell. 233

      • anonymous 5 years ago

No, we shouldn't eat meat because animals have lifes to and we are killing and eating its flesh which isn't good because, God himself has created these animals and where being disrespectful and going against Gods will, eating meat is wrong and us gursikhs shouldn't eat it...

      • anonymous 5 years ago

I think that we ALL shouldn't eat meat because a animal has a life to and we are killing it and eating its flesh also we a killing something that has been created by the lord himself...which is disrespectful, where going against Gods will, its WRONG.

If you dont show compassion to God's creatures, can you really see god within yourself?

      • anonymous 5 years ago

        no...

see i ll try to explain you what i think. If someone hits you you feel pain right the same way if we hit any animal even they will feel pain.

so it better not to give pain .

if i world u wanna be happy u need to make other people around u happy

if u don't then there is no use to live in this world.

hope u would understand this .Always respect others and our religion. And take all the good points from it and try to flow it.

LESSONS FROM GOD - The Dog & his Akashic records!

          .

The beautiful morning dawn was peeping thru the clouds,

sun rays were mischievously darting here and there,

shining on Birds chirping "Every breath love God"

Then the neighbors dog started his unceasing daily barking.

Barking every day for hours and hours).

          .

I went into meditation (super consciousness) and asked God for help for this Dog.

I was suddenly standing in the garden with the Dog

He looked at me and I looked at him!

          .

"Why are you barking continuously" I asked.

"Look at the walls around me, I want to be free, I want freedom, I want to play in the fields,

why am I stuck here in this compound, WHY, please free me" said the dog.

I asked Babaji my master & guide for help, "Please, Baba, I am at a loss how do I help

          this Dog?".

Baba spoke, "Amarjit, ask for the Dog's book of Life (His Akashic Records) to be opened)".

"Book of life, are you feeling okay? Baba, what are you saying - only Humans have a book of life"

"Amarjit, all particles of creation have a book of life.

          .

into this Divine computer /book is recorded every experience the soul undergoes!

I asked for the book of life to be opened.

          .

In the Book I was shown a passage where the Dog had agreed to serve

this master in this life time!

          .

"Read this you have your self agreed to serve this master this life time, you must reconsider

and be happy with him, treat your work as a worship to God, this will help you ascend in your next life time, from the animal kingdom unto the Human kingdom" I told the Dog.

          .

The Dog agreed, asked forgiveness for his actions and has stopped his furious barking and now contemplates on God's name with Baba's blessings.

          The Holy Bible : Acts 17:24-25 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

Every creature, even ants, flies and mosquitoes, possesses an immortal soul, according to all the teaching of the saints.

          .

To the western people, this is an entirely new idea.

          The eastern people accept this.
