Updated on May 1, 2016

We all know the effects of catnip on our cats but did you know catnip tea has many positive benefits for us, humans? In fact catnip tea benefits us by being a mild herbal sedative and is full of vitamins we need in our daily life. Another catnip tea benefit is that it aids improving digestion. Let's take a look at some of the benefits of drinking catnip tea.

One of the catnip tea benefits is that it aids in our digestion .Catnip tea benefits can ease conditions such as colic, cramps, diarrhea, and stomach gas. It is also an antacid relieving the misery of a sour stomach. Of course with your stomach feeling right, your appetite can get back on track, another one of catnip tea benefits.

Babies can also enjoy catnip tea benefits as their new bodies are able to digest catnip tea. However, the tea should not be given at full strength. Only use about one teaspoon of catnip leaves when preparing the drink for an infant. Many babies respond well to catnip tea. Especially when it is used to relieve colic.

Another one of catnip tea benefits is that it acts as a herbal sedative. Catnip tea can be used to wind down of a crazy day by calming nerves and easing anxiety. This, in turn, will reduce your stress level so you can better face the day and the challenges it brings. Another catnip tea benefit is that it does not contain caffeine. Thus, there is no artificial stimulation or crash as with coffee and soda.

The nepetalactone in catnip is the ingredient that provides the calming effect. A cup of catnip tea at bedtime is used as a way to relieve insomnia and get a full, restful night of sleep. This relaxation effect is perhaps the best of catnip tea benefits.

Vitamins are another of catnip tea benefits. A cup of catnip tea contains vitamins A, B, and C.It also contains calcium, iron, potassium, manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, selenium, and sodium. From vitamins, digestive aid, and relaxation, catnip tea benefits are almost endless.

To make a cup of catnip tea and enjoy the catnip tea benefits, add 1-2 tablespoons of dried catnip leaves to your cup. Then pour a cup of hot, but not boiling, water over the leaves. Cover and let steep for 10 – 15 minutes. Hot water should be used as boiling water will cause loss of flavor in your tea.

Some mix their catnip tea with chamomile or mint tea for added flavor and to increase the catnip tea benefits.

Strain out the leaves after the tea has finished steeping. Add lemon or honey to taste and enjoy your cup of catnip tea benefits.

I make large amounts of catnip tea and refill a spray bottle I keep in the shower. I use catnip tea as a detangler and hair repair tonic. It works better than any other product I've purchased and it's really inexpensive. It never dawned on me that it can be drank for medicinal purposes as well. Very cool...
