Champlain Valley Wines

Updated on January 16, 2015

Wines of the Lake Champlain Valley

Although not known traditionally for wines and wine production, the Lake Champlain Valley of northern Vermont and New York and southern Quebec has begun to establish a reputation for producing top quality wines from cold-hearty grapes.

Here we'll look at some of the vineyards of the Champlain Valley, the grapes that they grow and the fine wines that they produce.

Wine Business Growing in the Champlain Valley

For an industry that's a little more than twenty years old, vineyards and wine production seem to be thriving, despite conditions that are harsher than other wine producing regions.

Snow Farm Vineyard Concert Series
Snow Farm Vineyard Concert Series

Snow Farm Winery

South Hero, Vermont

Situated on an island in the middle of Lake Champlain and therefore able to enjoy the micro-climate created by the sixth largest lake in the U.S., Snow Farm's growing season is identical to the Burgundy region of France. This allows Snow Farm to grow cooler climate vinifera grapes, such as Pinot Noir and Riesling, in addition to the more cold hardy French Hybrids, such as Vidal Blanc and Baco Noir.

Due to Vermont's colder winter temperatures, Snow Farm produces, among other dessert wines, an ice wine in addition to its fine table wines table wines. Ice wine is rarer and more expensive than most table wines because it is "... a product that cannot be made in many other places in the world." (from the winery website)

Thursday evening live concert music series from June to September. Check out the latest concert schedule here.
